Culture: Trial of the century: Is Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer making fun of him?

  • You have to be comatose not to figure out how to get a dollar out of $52 billion. But who didn’t? Him!
  • Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer, Sam Adam Jr. • Making a comment that seems to suggest that Blago was too stupid to figure out how to defraud the state. The ex-Illinois governor’s former confidante, however, Antoin “Tony” Rezko, did, Adam argues. Adam’s opening statement lasted an hour and 45 minutes and opened up a trial destined to rank with the OJ Simpson trial for its sheer goofiness. Or at least we hope it does. source

Tech: Mozilla dude on Apple’s HTML5 demos: “Not intellectually honest”

  • Apple’s messaging is clearly meant to say ‘hey, we love the web’ but the actual demos they have and the fact that actively block other browsers from those demos don’t match their messaging. It’s not intellectually honest at all.
  • Mozilla evangelist Christopher Blizzard • Regarding a series of technical demos Apple put on their site to test HTML5. While the demos are cool – we particularly dig the font one – we were surprised to find out that the demos didn’t work on Firefox OR Chrome, despite the fact that most of the features were supported by both browsers. In case you don’t want to change browsers but want to test out the technology, here’s a version without the Steve-block. They still work, guys, strangely enough. source

World: Joran van der Sloot’s reported victim, Stephany Flores, Googled him

  • I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life. She had no right. … I confronted her. She was frightened, we argued and she wanted to get away. I grabbed her by the neck and I hit her.
  • Joran van deer Sloot (reportedly) • In the confession to the murder in Peru in which he is the main suspect. How did Flores intrude into his life? She looked up his name on the Internet. The guy has a pretty rough Google profile, doesn’t he? As a result of the confession, by the way, search teams have been organized in Aruba just in case this guy has any further things to say about the Natalee Holloway case. source

Culture: Terrible human being alert: Gary Coleman’s ex sold death photos

  • Dear God, woman, were you just waiting for him to die? Shannon Price, the ex-wife of the former child star who called the shots at the hospital, reportedly had professional photos taken of Coleman just before his death, which she then sold to the tabloids. If that doesn’t scream classless, we don’t know what does. As you might guess, his mom finds this unbelievable too. This guy had a terrible life, and his death was equally terrible. Why exploit him? source

Politics: Barack Obama a new kind of president, one who says “ass” on TV

  • Look, all these interviews take attention off the real story: There’s a big oil spill still gushing in the middle of the ocean and it needs to get fixed ASAP. It’s a huge problem for which we still don’t have a solution. Still, though, you have to imagine Jimmy Carter didn’t get this sharp-tongued when he was dealing with his own never-ending scandal, the Iran hostage crisis, which the spill keeps getting compared to. source

U.S.: Gulf oil spill: Obama plans to reopen offshore drilling soon

  • The blocking off of drilling affected thousands of Gulf Coast jobs. As bad as the oil spill is, the side effect of stopping offshore drilling to get regulators back in lockstep was nearly as damaging for the region’s economy. When the new regulations are put into place as soon as Tuesday, expect new rules on shallow water oil and gas drilling. Also, the White House is considering canning the liability cap on oil spills, because, well, hey, BP can afford to pay for the mess. source

World: Peruvian murder victim’s family Googled “Joran van der Sloot”

  • My wife typed ‘Joran van der Sloot’ into Google and started screaming for me to see. I couldn’t believe it. How could it be that guy?
  • Enrique Flores • On finding out that Joran van der Sloot, the now-confessed suspect in his daughter’s murder, was THAT guy. Van der Sloot, who was also the main suspect in the Natalee Holloway case, admitted to killing Stephany Flores tonight. Despite the nature of the crime, Peru’s criminal system isn’t nearly as harsh as the American system and the maximum sentence he can face is 35 years in prison. source
