U.S.: Obama’s first Guantanamo prosecution on hold due to “lawyer collapse”

  • Which, of course, is always a good reason. The lawyer for Omar Khadr, a Canadian who was captured in Afghanistan by U.S. forces at age 15, is on hold for a month after Khadr’s military defense lawyer, Jon Jackson, collapsed in court yesterday. Jackson needs to head back to the U.S. for a month for further medical treatment, meaning the trial of the now-23-year-old Khadr is put on hold. Jackson recently had gall bladder surgery. source

Tech: Mark Zuckerberg: My lawyer isn’t “unsure” about anything

  • If we said that we were unsure, I think that was likely taken out of context. Because I think we were quite sure that we did not sign a contract that says that they have any right to ownership over Facebook.
  • Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg • Responding to the widely-reported claim that Zuck’s lawyer is unsure that Zuckerberg signed a contract with Paul Ceglia. Despite this, he did reportedly have a contract with the wood fuel salesman. Just not one that gave the sketchy dude the right to 84 percent of Facebook. On a funny side note, Facebook has a lawyer named Lisa Simpson. Which is what we expected her to be all along. Right? source

Culture: Trial of the century: Is Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer making fun of him?

  • You have to be comatose not to figure out how to get a dollar out of $52 billion. But who didn’t? Him!
  • Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer, Sam Adam Jr. • Making a comment that seems to suggest that Blago was too stupid to figure out how to defraud the state. The ex-Illinois governor’s former confidante, however, Antoin “Tony” Rezko, did, Adam argues. Adam’s opening statement lasted an hour and 45 minutes and opened up a trial destined to rank with the OJ Simpson trial for its sheer goofiness. Or at least we hope it does. source

Politics: Guy pretends to be a birther to get out of doing his job

  • This dude thinks he’s all clever, trying to get out of his job as an army doctor by playing the birther card. He even has a (really annoying to the point you want to punch him) lawyer protecting him from answering questions. If he just wanted to be lazy and not do anything, he should’ve considered another field of work, like sitting on his butt, eating Cheetos and playing Xbox all day.

U.S.: Najibullah Zazi’s attorney says he sees a “rush to judgment”

  • I’d like to stop this rush to judgment because what I’ve seen so far does not amount to a conspiracy charge.
  • Defense Attorney J. Michael Dowling • On his client, Najibullah Zazi, who has been charged with plotting a terrorist attack in New York City. He’s being held without bail. Although it’s obvious that Dowling would say this about his client, he argues that there’s not a lot meat to the bones of the charges. “I don’t know the names of anybody else that allegedly conspired with Mr. Zazi,” Dowling said. “Those names have not been produced.”  • source
