Politics: Contract With America: Let’s call tea partiers “bizarro hippies”

  • Last night, a reader of ours made an astute observation. The Tea Party movement is doing a lot of damage to the memory of the old-school Boston Tea Party, which defined the start of our country. And it’s gonna be tough to wipe the movement away from the history. So, here’s our Contract With America. Let’s call the Tea Party Movement the “bizarro hippie movement.”
  • why? Because, much like the protest movement of the late 1960s, bizarro hippies meet up en masse, drive around crazy buses and rage about politics. Except the exact, bizarro opposite.
  • usage Use it as a non-proper noun. Example of usage: “Did you hear those bizarro hippies talking about slaying the Porkulus at Perkins the other day? One was wearing a ‘Palin 2012’ hat.”
  • next? From this post forward, ShortFormBlog will only call the Tea Party Movement by this name. We feel that our name is a better fit that best represents the movement’s historical context.

Politics: Michael Steele to all the Republicans he ticked off: Sorry, guys

  • You can’t please everyone, but you can certainly make them all mad at you at the same time. And that is a lesson well-learned. It is an opportunity as well.
  • RNC Chairman Michael Steele • At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, attempting to apologize for the drama around the group he leads, including the insane spending the group is accused of doing. During the speech in a half-full hotel conference room, Steele didn’t appear ready to resign from his leadership spot, but did apologize and try to build future optimism. “Folks have been mad at us in the past,” he said, “and we have learned from that past and we are ready to move on to a bright future, as leaders, as Republicans, as conservatives.” source

Culture: This just in: Tiger Woods thinks Tiger Woods sucks

  • We’ve been avoiding Tiger as much as humanly possible this week because we’re sick of talking about him, but this clip above is a good reason to acknowledge his existence. Keep that rage in check, bro. The whole world is watching.

Music: Saturday Mixtape: Why isn’t Sharon Jones famous yet, anyway?

  • 1. Harlem’s modus operandi is the same kind of garage rock we’ve been hearing for the last 40 years, but you have to admit that it’s so catchy that you may not care about that. We certainly don’t. We’re gonna throw this song into our Nuggets box set.
  • 2. Speaking of retro revivals, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are in the market for a mainstream breakthrough already. After Jones showed up with Michael Buble on “SNL” back in January, it’s clear that her band’s pitch-perfect ’60s soul-pop could succeed well beyond the old-school funk collectors that made up her early audience.
  • 3. Back around ’79 or ’80, before R.E.M. became massive stars, Peter Buck was big into fellow Athens, Ga. band The Method Actors, who he says he saw play 100 times in their short history. The post-punk band, which never got famous but were lynchpins for their scene, just had much of their nervy material re-released on compilation “This is Still it.” We can understand why Buck saw them so much.
  • 4. A couple of years ago, High Places sounded nothing like this. There was no undercurrent of darkness in their sound. In fact, one could claim it had almost a twee sensibility. But not here. “On Giving Up” instead relies heavily on dark tones and somber lyrics to propel itself. We’ll let you decide if the change was a good one.
  • 5. Laura Marling is more talented than we are already, and she’s only 20. We want to know why the world thinks that’s fair. “Goodbye England (Covered in Snow)” feels delicate, like she’s in the same room as you trying to cheer you up. It worked for us.

Politics: Dear Alan Grayson: Acting like a jerk at Perkins kinda lame

  • The story behind the clipRep. Alan Grayson, perhaps the closest thing the Democratic party has to a left-leaning crazy, comes to a RNC meeting in Orlando and accuses them of spying. It turns into this big thing covered here on Fox News. Showing backbone is one thing, Alan, but this kinda gets to the point where you turn into the joke, man. Although we must say – never been much been fans of Perkins. We’re IHOP all the way, so at the very least, we support Alan’s yelling in that department. source

World: The Vatican: Oh, that letter from the Pope was a form letter

  • There may be some overstep and rush to judgment going on here. … Moreover, while that proceeding was ongoing, there is no known report of the priest having re-offended.
  • Vatican lawyer Jeffrey Lena • Regarding that letter that suggested current pope may have had some connection to the sex-abuse scandals dogging the Catholic Church for the last 30 years. Lena claims the letter is “a form letter typically sent out initially with respect to laicisation cases.” The priest in question, who personally asked to be defrocked, was put on probation for three years after pleading no contest to tying up and raping two pre-teen boys. After he was finally defrocked in 1987, he was convicted of other sex crimes as a civilian. Yeah. This is a mess. source
