Offbeat: 8-Bit NYC: An amazing video game visualization of New York City

  • For some reason, this is awesome. Someone decided to turn New York City into an 8-bit map, which actually is more useful than you’d think, and even makes a huge city seem a little less daunting. We approve, though we admit to clicking and hoping we were pulled into a level of Zelda where we got the opportunity to slay rich socialites. source

Politics: The Tea Party movement getting in the way of actual tea parties

  • When I look at search engine results for ‘Chicago tea,’ I find a whole bunch of Chicago tea party movement sites. There are a few tea places and then all this political stuff. It’s pretty annoying.
  • Chicago tea shop owner Tony Gebely • Regarding a huge marketing problem he has as a result of the Tea Party – what if people actually want tea instead of fiscally conservative politics? It’s really hard to find it on Google. Gebely’s problem isn’t anywhere near as bad as a guy who’s starting a business called “Memphis Tea Party” – pretty much every result that comes up is for the Memphis Tea Party, the organization. source

Tech: Chatroulette’s maker may bring his randomness to the U.S.

  • Russian student Andrey Ternovskiy has reportedly applied for a visa. Could Chatroulette, that random piece of viral Internet goodness, go legit? Word on the street is that Ternovskiy is currently in a tug-of-war between Silicon Valley and his Russian homeland about where he goes to legitimize the service, which has grown from 500 to 1.5 million daily users in just three months (!!). One interesting fact from this ReadWriteWeb story: Google, Microsoft and Facebook alone have a combined market value, $500 billion, that equals a third of Russia’s annual economic output. Holy crap, kids. source

Culture: Is Scientology abusive? Tons of former members say yes

  • Why did we work so hard for this organization, and why did it feel so wrong in the end? We just didn’t understand.
  • Christie King Collbran • Regarding her decision to leave Scientology, specifically its elite Sea Organization. Collbran and others claim that the organization was abusive, forced them to work long hours for little pay, and kept them in a climate of fear. They aren’t alone – there are thousands of anti-Scientology Web sites out there, and some celebrities are even quitting the religion as a result of the claims, such as Oscar-winner Paul Haggis, who reportedly came to the conclusion that the claims of abuse must be true. source
