U.S.: No Republicans, no problem: The Senate Dems get health care going

  • It’s official, kids. The Democrats have taken weeks of attempting to get this shiznit on the Senate floor and actually gotten it on the freaking Senate floor. And they did it without a single Republican. Who knows if they’ll get any further with it, but it’s a great first step. source

Politics: Like “Lost,” Glenn Beck is gonna reveal his big plan next year

  • On August 28, 2010, I ask you, your family and neighbors to join me at the feet of Abraham Lincoln on the National Mall for the unveiling of The Plan and the birthday of a new national movement to restore our great country.
  • Glenn Beck • Describing our great national nightmare in detail. That’s right, boys – he’s gonna get his boys together to reveal his grand plan – how to (#^&(!&@ over the Democrats once and for freaking all. Or how he plans to get a bigger chalkboard. Or something. Note to all: Unless you’re one of them, avoid the National Mall on August 28, 2010. source

Music: Our Saturday Mixtape looks back at rock history’s greatest badasses

  • 1. Lou Reed is a badass because he managed to make a song like “Pale Blue Eyes” – an exercise in emotional nudity which few artists of his stature are willing to try – seem brave, not pansyish. It worked to strong effect in this year’s “Adventureland,” by the way.
  • 2. Marc Bolan is a badass because he lived fast, died young, and still managed to have a career full of badass moves. From his start as an off-kilter folkie (Tyrannosaurus Rex) to his peak as a glam god (T. Rex) who directly inspired the previous badass, his badassness set a pretty high bar.
  • 3. Paul Westerberg is a badass because he never gave into the mainstream when he was creating his greatest work. “Bastards of Young” is perhaps The Replacements’ catchiest tune, but instead of actively trying to push it on MTV, they made this video to go with it. That’s badass.
  • 4. Josh Homme is a badass because he released this song as a single. And then his band, Queens of the Stone Age, played it at a drug rehab center last year. It really is the feel-good hit of the summer. Or any year, really.
  • 5. James Murphy is a badass because he knows how to get down even though he’s getting old. Really, we could’ve picked any song Murphy did as LCD Soundsystem over the last five years and nailed it as evidence. But “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” works as both a sneering homage to Daft Punk and a homage to being a badass. So it wins. source

Politics: STLToday’s Kurt Greenbaum: First class bad word we can’t repeat here.

  • First rule of journalism: Don’t make yourself part of the story. Guess which rule the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s social media editor broke? As the so-called internet hate machine closes in on a guy who cost another guy his job for a pretty petty reason, we think there are a few things to learn from the whole ordeal.
  • one Don’t make yourself part of the story. The second Greenbaum decided to look up a reader’s IP address and took matters into his own hands, the story stopped being about the comment and started being about the admitted narc. Bad move, buddy.
  • two Don’t violate your readers’ trust. People go to your site with the belief that they won’t get screwed over. In fact, the St. Louis Post Dispatch’s own privacy policy promises this. When you decide to be the morality police, you violate a reader’s trust.
  • three Expect a swift, painful response. Not long after our boy Kurt did this, he felt retribution from all corners of the interweb, including Reddit and Digg. And honestly, he should lose his job. He turned a minor issue into a policy-breaking debacle. source

Politics: Senate update: The Democrats have 60 votes for health care!

  • Although I don’t agree with everything in this bill, I have concluded that I believe it is more important that we begin this debate to improve our nation’s health care system for all Americans rather than just simply drop the issue and walk away.
  • Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln • On her reason for agreeing to allow the Senate bill to go to discussion. Her move gives the Democrats 60 votes. Reminder: This is only a vote to discuss health care. None of the moderate Democrats have agreed to a final vote, just more discussion. source

Music: Jason Segel’s singing for the LAAA-DIES, complete with digits.

Hey baby, want to call me? Judd Apatow acolyte and “I Love You, Man” star Jason Segel has the right idea. At a Swell Season (i.e. actors from “Once“) show last week, Segel dropped his number to ladies in the middle of a song. Julius has been having trouble with the ladies lately, so he might try it, too. source
