U.S., World: The three wannabe airline bombers got life sentences

  • “The most grave and wicked conspiracy ever proven within this jurisdiction.” Abdulla Ahmed Ali, Assad Sarwar and Tanvir Hussain, the three men responsible for forcing you to carry your liquids in plastic bags, have each been sentenced to life in prison for their attempted 2006 trans-Atlantic airline attack. The three were convicted of a murder plot in the U.K., though they claim it was for a political statement. Each must serve at least 32 years before being eligible for parole, with Ahmed Ali having to serve at least 40. source

Politics: Obama: “How can we make sure civility is interesting?”

  • Last night, Obama was on “60 Minutes” discussing health care. This segment is perhaps the most interesting part of the whole thing. He discusses Joe Wilson a little but turns it into a broader statement on civility in our current political discourse. (What happened to it?) We don’t care which side you’re on. Obama’s points are sound here and should be heeded by everyone.source

Culture: “Family Guy” guy Seth MacFarlane interviewed by a total hater

  • Personally, I find the show’s rape jokes especially unfunny. In one episode, Peter learns that three co-eds were raped and murdered. He says to himself, ‘Everyone’s getting laid but me.’ Why is that funny?
  • New York Times Magazine reporter Deborah Solomon • Questioning Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane with the zest of a dimly-lit interrogation. Beyond this question, which clearly comes from someone who doesn’t like the show, she grills MacFarlane on other topics related to the Emmy-nominated show, such as sexism, abortion and the supposed low quality of the show’s animation. We hope he didn’t confess to a crime by accident. • source

Music: Contradiction: Pearl Jam “sells out” with a song about integrity

  • After years under the Sony corporate umbrella, doing things like avoiding Ticketmaster and birthing Nickelback’s sound, Pearl Jam decided to release its newest album, “Backspacer,” exclusively via Target. source
  • Despite this seeming sell-out by a band notorious for integrity, Eddie Vedder’s singing about idealism on “The Fixer”: “When something’s gone, I wanna fight to get it back again!” It actually kinda makes sense. source

Biz, Tech: T-Mobile’s parent might buy Sprint. B … but … the unlimited plan!

  • The Now Network might be a thing of the past. Sprint’s shares surged this morning on word that Deutsche Telekom AG was looking into buying the third-largest wireless company. Now, T-Mobile isn’t a bad company, so it’s not like, we don’t know, AT&T buying them, but Sprint JUST announced this killer unlimited plan. We could see it going away under T-Mobile. source

World: Osama bin Laden released a new message. Really? He’s still alive?

  • The time has come for you to liberate yourselves from fear and the ideological terrorism of neoconservatives and the Israeli lobby. The reason for our dispute with you is your support for your ally Israel, occupying our land in Palestine.
  • “Osama bin Laden” • In a new message from “the leader.” The message had “him” saying that Israel was the crux of the conflict between al-Qaeda and the U.S. “He” went further, saying that there was no real policy shift under Obama due to lobbyists. We hope “he” gets to see the outside of a cave every once in a while. • source

Music: Kanye West didn’t learn anything from that “South Park” episode

  • We have no clue where the heck Kanye West came from, but there he is, completely ruining Taylor Swift’s shining moment. We hope the next time Kanye wins an award, Taylor Swift steals the mic from him and reps Hannah Montana.source
