Culture: We hate Carrie Prejean. Will they please take away her crown?

  • Carrie’s fate rests in the hands of Donald Trump. Despite the fact that Trump is famous for firing people, he’s shown a little bit of compassion for pageant winners. Miss California Carrie Prejean, however, is a mess unto herself, the perfect combination of liar, activist and PR nightmare that could be enough to convince the Donald to get rid of her. Fortunately, Tami Farrell, the Miss California runner-up, has been doing most of Prejean’s job already since Prejean’s been too busy fighting gay marriage. source

U.S., World: Roxana Saberi is just happy to be out of prison

  • I am very happy that I have been released and reunited with my father and mother. I am very grateful to all the people who knew me or didn’t know me and helped for my release. I don’t have any specific plans for the time being. I want to stay with my parents.
  • Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi • In short remarks after getting released yesterday. Saberi could have faced eight years in jail on espionage charges in Iran but instead got out after about a month. Let’s hope she enjoys going home to the U.S. • source

Tech: Why Square Enix is a lame gaming company with no heart

  • A bunch of huge fans of Square’s classic ’90s RPG “Chrono Trigger” took it upon themselves to build a fan-tribute game. source
  • “Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes,” worked on since 2004, was nearing release in a few weeks. It was 98% complete. source
  • Despite the fact it was a non-proft venture, Square Enix sent them a cease-and-desist letter telling them to stop. LAME! source

Biz, Tech: Like big, obtrusive ads? Of course you do. More are coming.

  • In times of recession, online ads get bigger. MSNBC is among the first in a long line of advertisers to switch to wide-format ads that take up full pages and recede, that make sidebars ultra-huge and makes it so that they never go away, ever. They’re all part of a group called the Online Publishers Assocation, which has agreed to use these ads. We have a feeling reading articles on the Internet is going to get annoying, but at least these sites aren’t charging. *sigh* source

Biz, U.S.: The stimulus was supposed to save jobs. It isn’t working.

  • There was all the talk at the time about how the stimulus package wasn’t big enough, and that is true here. It’s barely letting us keep our noses above water.
  • Bill Lyne • Faculty union president of Western Washington University in Bellhingham, Wash. His school is bracing for 400 layoffs of staff members and adjunct faculty – just one example of how the $135 billion to limit layoffs as part of the $787 billion stimulus package is running headfirst into the reality that the states just aren’t making enough in tax revenue. • source

Tech, U.S.: Court: A dude uploaded naked pics of himself? Clearly it’s hacking.

  • Richard Wolf was looking at (and distributing) porn at work. An Ohio appellate court upheld a felony hacking conviction last week of Wolf that claimed he exceeded his authorized use of the computer. Part of the reason Wolf is facing this conviction is that the law has stretched – The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act has been allowed to be amended by the states who have put in restrictions against access to unauthorized information at work. Technically, porn is unauthorized, but most experts agree that was never the intent of the law. source
