Music: The Beatles, remastered; updated albums out in September

  • The date? Zero-9-zero-9-zero-9. Apple Records will mass-re-release the Beatles’ albums in a digitally-remastered format, along with two box sets – one in stereo and one in mono (for nerds and purists). The sets will come with DVD documentaries on the making of each album. Also on that day, the “Rock Band” Beatles game comes out, so it’s a good day to be into the Beatles. Regarding the elephant in the room, no word on digital release of the albums yet. source

  • one The DSi has an SD card slot, in case you want to jam out to your favorite whiny Emo songs while gaming.
  • two There’s multiple cameras on the DSi – both to shoot pics of you and your imaginary buddies.
  • three Like bigger screens? Of course you do! The DSi has two 3.25-inch matte (not glossy) screens.
  • four The DSi now packs the DSi Store, an App Store-style wi-fi download store, which is pretty awesome, kids.
  • five Sadly, there’s no GBA slot, so if you have some old-school games around, you’re screwed. source

U.S., World: Uh, hey Iraq, it’s Obama; betcha didn’t expect to see me.

  • Out of nowhere Obama wasn’t scheduled to come to Iraq, but he went anyway, for a few reasons – to talk shop with Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki and Gen. Ray Odierno, as well as to hand out a few medals of valor to U.S. troops. It’s his first trip to the country since he was elected; he went while campaigning.
  • A busy trip Obama’s managed to do a lot in his international trip – between the G20 summit, the European tour, and avoiding an assassination attempt by some dude in Turkey, he’s done a good job of playing diplomat. Good job man, and make sure you have a beer after you’re done. source

Culture, Music, Politics: Dear Eminem: The formula’s wearing very thin

  • We get it, man. Marshall, you’re one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and this is the make-or-break moment. Critics, who howled in disappointment at “Encore,” are wanting “Relapse” (out in May) to be a return to form. Fans are looking for the most notorious rapper of the last decade to start making hits again. But could you at least make it a little more surprising?
  • The video Eminem is one of maybe four artists – Michael Jackson, Weird Al and Weezer being the other three – who nails the videos every time. “We Made You,” the first single from “Relapse,” is no exception. With pop-culture riffs all over the place, it manages to nail Jessica Simpson, “Star Trek” (see Dre as Capt. Kirk; LOL) and a host of other media icons with ease.
  • However …… this is exactly the kind of song and exactly the kind of video that Eminem releases as a first single – and a decade in, and his aim’s getting a little off. Riffs on Bret Michaels and Portia di Rossi? Really? And we can see a few Republicans getting uppity over Sarah Palin’s trashing. Marshall, you need a new trick; this one’s just old and tired. source
