Tech: Apple’s iPad not passing the test at a couple of big schools

  • GWU The university says its wireless network’s security features don’t play nice with the iPad. We’ve been on George Washington’s campus, and we’re pretty sure it’s because their wireless network sucks.
  • Princeton The Ivy League school has blocked some of the devices on their network due to DHCP issues with the device – something a reader of ours mentioned last week. It, however, is working on a fix. source

Tech, U.S.: Thanks to the FCC, the net neutrality debate’s flaring up again

  • Consumer groups very favorable towards the rules. “This is a tremendous day for millions of us who have been clamoring to keep the internet free from discrimination,” said Free Press executive director John Silver. source
  • After the new rules were announced, wireless providers collectively freaked out. So did big cable companies like Comcast. A bunch of Republican congressmen also submitted a bill threatening to cut the FCC’s funding. source

Biz, Tech: T-Mobile’s parent might buy Sprint. B … but … the unlimited plan!

  • The Now Network might be a thing of the past. Sprint’s shares surged this morning on word that Deutsche Telekom AG was looking into buying the third-largest wireless company. Now, T-Mobile isn’t a bad company, so it’s not like, we don’t know, AT&T buying them, but Sprint JUST announced this killer unlimited plan. We could see it going away under T-Mobile. source

Biz, Tech: The kings of overpriced service, Boingo, own wi-fi hotspots now.

  • Back in 2001, Boingo applied for a patent on connecting computers to routers using this budding service called wi-fi. In the time since, it’s proliferated everywhere, becoming synonymous with laptops and iPhones. While hotspots are free many places, Boingo slowly became known for its overpriced wireless access points. source
  • Now it’s 2009. Boingo got approval for the patent in January, and now they’re telling the world all about it in a press release. “This patent represents a huge addition to Boingo’s intellectual property,” says CEO David Hagan, who will face the wrath of coffee-shop dwellers nationwide if he chooses to enforce it. Jerk. source

Tech: Available options for enabling tethering on your AT&T iPhone

  • According to The Unofficial Apple Weblog (where friend of the site Megan Lavey works), AT&T plans to offer a super-expensive $55 data plan to allow you to use the iPhone’s 3G on your laptop. Laaaaaaaaame.
  • According to 9to5Mac (where, sadly, no friends of the site work), you can hack your 3.0-upgraded iPhone using some simple non-jailbreaking steps to enable tethering in five minutes. Guess which one we’re doing?

Tech, World: Why are text messages 160 characters or less? Blame this guy.

  • My friend said this was impossible for the mass market. I was more optimistic.
  • Friedhelm Hillebrand • The german man behind the technology used to create SMS, more commonly known by drunk teenagers at parties as texting. Hillebrand made the realization that 160 characters was, as he put it, “perfectly sufficient.” But early technology could only handle 128 characters. Fortunately, they kept working and got it up to 160. Did his technology make him rich? No, but everyone uses it, so isn’t that enough? • source

Biz, Tech: My, how success changes things: Verizon wants the iPhone

  • “High-level” discussions USA Today reports that Apple and Verizon have been talking for a few months about the possibility of bringing the iPhone to the platform. It’s a severe change for the wireless provider, who famously did not want to bend to Apple’s standards a few years back. source

  • AT&T should freak out If Apple brings the iPhone to another platform, AT&T should be plenty scared – 40% of their new mobile customers last quarter bought iPhones, a massive chunk of the pie. And as many don’t like AT&T’s service, it could be a coup for Verizon. source
