Tech: Dear AP Stylebook: “Web site” is not “website.” Please no changey

  • Responding to reader input, we are changing Web site to website. This appears on Stylebook Online today and in the 2010 book next month.
  • The official Twitter @APStylebook account • Regarding a minor language change that has us all riled up. We’ve spent the last six years going out of our way to type “Web site” instead of “website,” to the point where we way preferred it that way. Now these jerks want to change it. We’re offended. Even worse, Twitter largely agrees with them. We’re gonna throw something if this style stands. Where’s our AP Stylebook when we need it, and is there a way to make it easier to break something with it? source

Tech: We’re following Topeka’s lead, changing our name to Google

  • We’ve thought long and hard about it these last fifteen minutes. Dear Google, we want on the fast broadband gravy train just like Topeka, and we feel that we have a surefire way to ensure that we get on said gravy train. That’s right. We’re changing our name to Google. ShortFormBlog had a good run these last fourteen months, but we all know that you can’t take anything to chance when fast internet is on the line. We’re still working out the details of transferring the domain name over from the old owner (they won’t sell, but we hope we can get them to budge), but let us from now on be known as Google. Unofficially.

Biz: The Adventures of Newsday Customer No. 36: Deep, dark blues

The color scheme on Newsday’s $4 million paywall-blocked Web site is way too dark. Is it possible that the newspaper’s Web site is depressed for some reason? source

Culture: Like everyone else, Bill Gates on Twitter to promote himself

  • In case you were wondering why everyone seemed amazed that Bill Gates joined Twitter yesterday, here’s why. It’s a fresh reminder that Twitter is just as susceptible to calculated publicity campaigns as any other medium. It just looks viral. That said, we’re not here to scold, we’re here to praise a guy who gives most of his money to charity because he’s too much of a nerd to be anything but our modern-day Andrew Carnegie. Larry Ellison is probably snorting coke off a hooker in a hotel (not room, hotel) he rented out. Carlos Slim’s wasting his money on bad investments like Circuit City and The New York Times. Warren Buffett’s probably making Jiffy Pop in his modest Nebraska home. But our Bill is using his money to help make the world better. We salute you, dude. source

Tech: Meet the world’s most famous Drupal-based site: Whitehouse.Gov

whitehouse1025
  • Well, that certainly helps with open government. The White House uses the same technology that many huge Web sites use (along with our bros at Bluffton Today, where we worked in our formative years). Drupal’s open source. Now, so is Whitehouse.gov. This is cool, kids.source

Tech: Slate cuts the crap, just gives you the Slatest news, simply.

  • And good for them. Really. OK, we’re kinda sad because it appears they’ve stolen our idea to some degree, but Slate’s newest site, The Slatest, is a news aggregator that doesn’t get bogged down by lots and lots (and lots) of links, like, say, Digg, Reddit, The Huffington Post, The Drudge Report, and … we could go on. A handful of really good news stories, linked in such a way that you know what you’re clicking, with a giant freaking ad that doesn’t get in the way. We approve. Good show, Slate. source

Biz, Music: Vibe Magazine’s phoenix-like rise from the ashes came quick

  • Now Web-focused, with a quarterly magazine. Yesterday, Uptown Media announced that they had agreed to take on both iconic hip-hop rag Vibe Magazine and its Web site. First on the agenda? Site redesign! By the end of the year, they hope to have another print product on the shelves, this time a quarterly publication with a smaller circulation. Vibe stopped printing after a 40% decline in ads bled them dry earlier this year. source

World: Cuba joins the Internet age with a black-market Craiglist wannabe

The name, Revolico, stands for “disarray,” a cheeky way to describe the country’s post-embargo economy. But the site is a shot in the arm for the black market. source
