World: The judge at the Mumbai attacks trial is really throwing us for a loop

  • This trial is full of suprises. First, the guy has to confess to being involved in the Mumbai attacks. (I know, right? Who does that.) And now, the judge has put a gag order on his latest testimony, meaning all the awesome journalists over there can’t write about it and we can’t read about it. No fair. source

U.S.: George Tiller was the wedge in the ultimate wedge issue, abortion

  • Earlier this year, Tiller was acquitted of 19 counts on claims that second opinions given in his late-term abortion cases were not independent. Kansas law requires that prior to a late-term abortion, a patient receive a second opinion completely unrelated to the first.

Culture, Music: Phil Spector convicted of murder, terrible hair

  • If it feels like this case has dragged on, it has. Spector was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2003 death of actress Lana Clarkson. It’s his second trial; the first ended in a mistrial, so it took six years for justice to be served. Spector, if you forgot, is the guy behind the “Wall of Sound” which helped/hindered albums from artists ranging from the The Ramones to The Beatles. Clarkson was a B-movie actress who got caught up with the wrong guy, apparently. source

Biz: What was Bernie Madoff trying to do when he stole all that money?

  • There’s a good question to ask. Dude stole $50 billion in a fraudulent ponzi scheme and apparently hired people to make fake accounting documents for some stupid reason. As Madoff faces up to 150 years in jail on 11 federal charges, which he’ll likely plead guilty to on Thursday, his investors hope that the guy finally explains what his motive was. source

Tech, World: Things are looking up for The Pirate Bay in their spectrial

  • This is a sensation. It is very rare to win half the target in just one and a half days and it is clear that the prosecutor took strong note of what we said yesterday.
  • Per E Samuelson • Defense lawyer in The Pirate Bay’s trial in Sweden. The Torrent tracker now only faces charges of “assisting making available copyright infringement,” as the prosecution could not prove the torrent files were specifically tied to The Pirate Bay. • source
