World: Mustafa Abu al-Yazid: Another Al-Qaeda leader goes down?

  • He’s a top-ranking dude in Afghanistan. It’s still not confirmed, but the U.S. believes that Mustafa Abu al-Yazid was a victim of a missile strike that hit over the last couple of weeks. Al-Qaeda is talking about the dude like he was killed. “His death will only be a severe curse by his life upon the infidels,” a member of the group wrote on a radical Web site. source

World: Thailand decides to treat old prime minister like terrorist

  • Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra reportedly funded the Red Shirt protests. And it wasn’t a modest amount, either – over ten weeks, Thaksin reportedly gave $1.5 million to the opposition efforts each day. So now he’s wanted on terrorism charges and could face the death penalty. He hasn’t had a super-charmed life of late – the government took $1.4 billion of his assets in February after an unfavorable high-court decision. The opposition isn’t backing down, either, as they attempted to impeach current PM Abhisit Vejjajiva. source

Politics: Joe Lieberman’s idea to strip citizenship from terrorists? Clumsy

  • It’s a sad day when Glenn Beck (!) offers a more eloquent defense of constitutional rights than the normally statesmanlike senator from Connecticut.
  • Commentator David Frum • Regarding Joe Lieberman’s suggestion that those who show loyalty and support to terror organizations lose their citizenship. Frum notes in a number of ways why this is a stupid idea, specifically because there’s already legal precedent for this (the 1940 Nationality Act, which was limited in 1967 by the Supreme Court and expanded slightly by Congress) and that legal precedent would mean that the enemy combatant would have to go through a lengthy court case. Bet Lieberman didn’t think of that. source

U.S.: Times Square evacuation false alarm: Go about your business

  • It was a bunch of water bottles, guys. Six days after the last incident, and just a couple of days after a false alarm involving the RFK bridge, part of Times Square was evacuated again because of a package that arrived about an hour ago. Sorry for the rough week, New Yorkers. We’ll keep you posted. (Update: CNN is reporting that the incident, much like the RFK bridge incident, was a false alarm. Whew. Between this and the stock market, our blood pressure has been going way up lately.) source
