Tech: Major Web sites like YouTube and Digg are dropping IE6 support

  • The Google-owned video service recently started displaying on IE6 a message that they would be dropping support for the browser soon, recommending that users switch to Chrome, IE8 or Safari, a message met with cheers by some. (Including us!)
  • While Digg isn’t nearly so hardcore about the switch, they have been investigating it, and will likely be ditching login support for IE6. They found that many IE6 users can’t upgrade because companies are lazy and built on crappy, poorly-made IE6-only Web apps.

World: Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya explains how he was couped

  • I was awakened by shots, and the yells of my guards, who resisted for about 20 minutes. I came out in my pajamas, I’m still in my pajamas … When (the soldiers) came in, they pointed their guns at me and told me they would shoot if I didn’t put down my cellphone.
  • Jose Manuel Zelaya • On the coup which stripped his leadership of the country. Zelaya has a lot of international support, especially from Latin American nations such as his brah Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, who has threatened military action against any new regime Honduras puts in place. The U.S. supports Zelaya too. • source

Tech, World: On Twitter and want to support Iran protests? Go #Green4Iran

Go Green
  • Many who support Mir Hussein Moussavi on Twitter today are going green in support of the candidate. J A Esselink, a.k.a. @Uncucumbered, has been putting in big time work to convince others to join her at a rate of hundreds an hour. Much credit to grassroots efforts. (Oh yeah, in other Twitter/Iran news, this is a great unfiltered way to read what’s happening in the country.)source

World: British prime minister Gordon Brown has like zero support

  • I now believe your continued leadership makes a Conservative victory more, not less likely. That would be disastrous for our country.
  • Work and Sensions Secretary James Purnell • Who, in a very harshly-written letter to the media, asked Gordon Brown to resign. If it were just Purnell doing this, it’d be a big deal, but he’s only the fifth Labour Party member to resign from Brown’s government this week. WTF dude? Can’t you keep it together? Need a hug or something? Labour Party support is at historic lows, BTW. • source

Tech: T-Mobile: We’ll support your iPhone even if we don’t sell it

  • All in all, this cements my loyalty to T-Mobile. Even without officially supporting a particular phone, they are willing to make accommodations to ensure the iPhone users on their network continue to enjoy good service.
  • Consumerist reader “John” • On his positive experience with the wireless provider after his unlocked, jailbroken iPhone went wonky due to a problem on T-Mobile’s end. The company offered service credits to affected customers and a rep even went so far as to post on Apple hacking forum about the problem. Well, that’s just awesome. • source

U.S.: “Craigslist killer” Phil Markoff’s friends give him the benefit of the doubt

  • By merely joining this group, you have all shown the restraint and intelligence necessary to not jump to conclusions and be able to read news stories with a fair eye.
  • A message from the Facebook group “Phil Markoff is Innocent Until Proven Guilty” • The group, currently 218 members strong, is getting outsized media coverage considering its size. Despite this, police note that the case is fairly open-and-shut, as the murder weapon was found in Markoff’s apartment. • source

Tech: Most computers still use Windows XP, but MS is cutting support

  • Mainstream support of XP ends next week. Microsoft owns a hefty chunk of the PC market, sure, but they own it on a seven-year-old operating system. 63% of all Internet users – not just Windows users, but the overall market – use XP, and it’s still sold with new computers. They’ll still provide security fixes, but bug fixes are done after this week. MS officials say that since the platform is so mature it shouldn’t be a problem, but this still seems kind of sketchy. Meanwhile, Vista cries in the corner, all gussied up for the school dance but without a date. source
