Politics: Voice Of America’s website hacked by “Iranian Cyber Army”

  • Mrs. Clinton Do you want to hear the voice of oppressed nations will from heart of USA? Islamic world doesn’t believe USA trickery. We call on you to stop interfering in Islamic countries.
  • The “Iranian Cyber Army” • A message posted on the front page of Voice of America, which fell victim to the self-proclaimed Iranian hackers. This became known to us while attempting to view an article VOA had posted regarding the UN Security Council’s special session on Gaddafi and Libya. The link directed to the site’s main page, which had been taken over by a logo bearing an Iranian flag and a rifle, as well as this message. This is not uncommon for this group- Twitter was notably struck in 2009. source

Biz: Dish Network makes an ad. So does DirecTV. Lawsuits ahoy!

  • The original commercial Dish Network’s main selling point? It’s cheaper, and it offers the same quality of product as DirecTV. It’s not nearly the same as, say, AT&T and Verizon’s competing maps, but it understandably might provoke a response from DirecTV.
  • The (supposed) rip-off And here’s that response! It’s honestly a more clever approach, using Alex Trebek in a Jeopardy-style game. However, if you listen about halfway through, you’ll hear the same kind of message as the original commercial in this clip, too. source

Politics: The Democrats “hope” Obama can “change” his health care talk

  • I don’t think the messaging has been very clear … the campaign to disseminate the messaging has not been as relentless and organized as it needs to be.
  • Democratic pollster Celinda Lake • Discussing Obama’s health care rhetoric. In general, many political types say that Obama’s message on health care is lacking – there’s no “change” or “hope” to drive the campaign like there was in January. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs admits there have been stumbles: “I don’t think anybody here believes we’ve pitched a no-hit game or a perfect game. I don’t think that’s the case.” • source

Politics: David Pogue wants cell companies to suck it up and change

  • These messages are outrageous for two reasons. First, they waste your time. Good heavens: it’s 2009. WE KNOW WHAT TO DO AT THE BEEP.
  • David Pogue • In his blog that’s leading the way in the “Take Back the Beep Campaign.” Pogue argues that those messages that tell you how to leave a voicemail are a “blatant money-grab” and just plain stupid. As you can imagine, not many people disagree with him.  • source

Tech: Major Web sites like YouTube and Digg are dropping IE6 support

  • YouTube The Google-owned video service recently started displaying on IE6 a message that they would be dropping support for the browser soon, recommending that users switch to Chrome, IE8 or Safari, a message met with cheers by some. (Including us!)
  • Digg While Digg isn’t nearly so hardcore about the switch, they have been investigating it, and will likely be ditching login support for IE6. They found that many IE6 users can’t upgrade because companies are lazy and built on crappy, poorly-made IE6-only Web apps.

World: The German school shooter’s warning, written on the Web

  • Everyone laughs at me. No one recognizes my potential. I mean this seriously. I have got a weapon here and tomorrow I am going to go to my former school and give them hell.
  • Tim Kretschmer • The student who shot up a school in Winnenden, Germany, killing 15. He said this to a friend on the Internet the night before. Most of his victims were female – including eight female classmates and three female teachers. (Update: This information has proven to be false. – Ed.) • source
