Tech: Dear Wolfram Alpha: Working with Bing is actually smart

wolframalpha1112
  • Wolfram Alpha is a smart idea that has been neutered by bad decision-making – charging an embarrassingly-high price for their iPhone app, treating copyright like something they can control. Well, now they have something to grasp onto: Bing. While their searches aren’t all that useful by themselves (too insular), combined with a decent general-purpose search engine, it starts to feel like a killer app. This specific execution is why people got excited about the product at launch. Not the $50 iPhone app. source

U.S.: The New York Times overanalyzes Obama in great detail

  • A year after Barack Obama was elected president, he is juggling many of the issues that defined his candidacy — and then some.
  • The lede to a New York Times piece on Obama’s status one year after the election • The piece, which visually is immaculately broken down, splits his presidency into ten different parts, from “Terrorism Suspects” to “Influence.” Plus, it’s interactive and allows for reader comments. Way to show off, NYT. • source

Tech: Thanks to Google, Lala’s founders probably have this song on repeat

Celebrate good times, come on! Google just decentralized the whole music industry, and Lala is going to be the big winner. We heard rumblings of a Google-search-based music service last week, but now it's official, and boy, does it make walled gardens look silly. Other services (like MySpace's iLike) will get the nod too, but Lala will be the biggest beneficiary of the service, which will allow full-song samples to play from doing a search for either a song or (this is pretty cool) a lyric. Watch out, Apple and Amazon. source

Culture: Lifetime stays classy, pulls the Balloon Boy “Wife Swap” episode

  • OK A while ago, Lifetime scheduled an episode of “Wife Swap,” featuring a wacky storm-chasing family, to air on Thursday.
  • bad Since then, the Heene family has been on TV around the clock after perpetrating the “Balloon Boy” hoax last week.
  • great Rather than give them even more time on TV, Lifetime pulled the episode. Good job. This family needs no more press. source

Biz: Coke decides to stop hiding its caloric counts on its bottles

This is a smart move on Coke’s part, though symbolic. Now, let’s see if they screw it up by renaming it iDrink 2.0. source
