Biz: SEC settlement: Dell pays for pumping up earnings with Intel’s money

  • » Don’t forget: This was largely the same era during which Dell knowingly sold millions of computers with 97 percent failure rates. So if you want to talk about business practices which eventually led to lawsuits and SEC settlements, look no further than Dell circa 2005.

World: Israel learns building stuff on the West Bank unpopular with the U.S.

  • Yesterday the decision by the Israeli government to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem undermines that very trust, the trust that we need right now in order to begin … profitable negotiations.
  • Vice President Joe Biden (in tandem with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas) • Regarding Israel’s decision to begin building Jewish settlements on the West Bank, which was great timing because Joe-boy just happened to be in town. Abbas wants Israel to reverse its decision. This is also bad because Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put a halt to all housing starts for ten months back in November. For those playing at home, it hasn’t been ten months. And Netanyahu is pissed. source

Tech: Microsoft settles patent claim with ex-employee accused of spying

  • Miki Mullor and Microsoft make nice. Way back in February – you know, back before the beginning of time – we posted an article about a former Microsoft employee who reportedly double-dipped by working at MS while CEO of another company. Miki Mullor, who is the Chairman of Ancora Technologies Inc., contacted us today to inform us that the patent infringement lawsuit between him and Microsoft has been settled. Neither party claims responsibility in the case. source

Tech: Amazon’s long Orwellian nightmare is finally over

  • There was a settlement in the “1984” lawsuit. Amazon, which deleted a bunch of George Orwell’s books off users’ Kindles, did not admit guilt in the $150,000 settlement (which largely goes to the lawyers and literacy charities; no word on what the plaintiffs got), but they did agree not to delete content off of users’ Kindles without their consent. Which is what everyone wanted in the first place. source

Biz, Tech: Warning: Exploding iPods can lead to confidentiality agreements

  • I thought it was a very disturbing letter…They’re putting a life sentence on myself, my daughter and Ellie’s mum, not to say anything to anyone.
  • Ken Stanborough • On the letter he received from Apple after his daughter’s iPod exploded. He had contacted the company for a refund, which they offered – but with a nasty clause. If he took their money, he had to agree to keep quiet and if he failed to do so his family could face litigation. Yeah, he didn’t sign it. Take that, bullies!  • source
