It’s weird when some of the staunchest anti-homosexuality figures are accused of homosexuality. Megachurch leader Bishop Eddie Long could be in huge trouble.

We do not think this is a hoax. We don’t know that this is a potential suicide, but we know that it’s real and we’re going to find them.
Palmdale, Calif. sheriff’s spokesperson Steve Whitmore • On the fate of at least 13 alleged cult members who disappeared last night. Evidence, including letters, seems to suggest that they planned a mass suicide. Police are still looking for those involved, including eight children. The alleged cult leader, Reyna Marisol Chicas, 32, used to spend hours at at time at a local church, but her group had broken off. Fingers crossed. source
This country stands for the proposition that all men and women are created equal; that they have certain inalienable rights — one of those inalienable rights is to practice their religion freely.
President Barack Obama • Discussing the whole hubbub about religion in this country. Let’s just put it this way. Islam is getting a bad rap right now and Obama wants it to quit. “We are not at war against Islam,” Obama said. We are at war against terrorist organizations that have distorted Islam or falsely used the banner of Islam to engage in their destructive acts.” Which seems obvious but maybe not. source
The Holy See is following the case with attention and participation. The position of the church, which is opposed to the death penalty, is that stoning is a particularly brutal form.
Vatican spokesperson Federico Lombardi • Informing the world that Pope Benedict XVI is willing to get diplomatically involved in the Iran stoning case if it escalates any further. The case, if you’re not aware, involves Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was convicted of adultery in a case that involved the death of her husband. She was sentenced to stoning, which involves groups of people throwing stones at the person convicted – not exactly a fun way to die. (She was also sentenced to 99 lashes because of a newspaper photo that was reportedly not even of her.) The fact that this has the Pope’s attention raises hope that there might be a diplomatic solution to the humanitarian crisis. source
There were those who said I couldn’t win. because I had a funny name. I trusted in the American people’s capacity to get beyond all this nonsense.
President Barack Obama • Taking on the unfounded claims about his religion by saying he’s not bothered by them. In other news, his old pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, totally had his back on his religion. Too bad the AP got that fact incredibly wrong. It’s “sycophants,” not psychopaths. Big difference. source
» Most Christians are mixed: As Christian-based religions go, Mormons aren’t alone in their dislike of Obama; just half of Catholics approved of him and 43 percent of Protestants did. Jews were another group that greatly approved of Obama, with 61 percent giving him love. Other non-Christian religions largely approved of him too. Despite this, it’s worth noting that he’s down in every religious category listed, but none more than Mormons, where he’s fallen by 19 percent.
I think the president’s problem is that he was born a Muslim, his father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father like the seed of Judaism is passed through the mother. He was born a Muslim, his father gave him an Islamic name.
Rev. Franklin Graham • Blowing smoke over the controversy around Obama’s faith. Because, you know what, this really helps our country and gives us another fake controversy to worry about. May we remind everyone that Franklin Graham was the same guy who wasn’t allowed to pray at the Pentagon during the National Day of Prayer because of his comments on the Islamic faith. (We gave him a slight show of support back then, but now we’re not so sure.) How does giving this jerk a megaphone help anything? See, the difference between him and his father, the Rev. Billy Graham, is that Billy built his legacy on bringing people together. Franklin is building it on dividing people. Shameful. This is the problem with our country. We’re building useless divisions. source
This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are.
Barack Obama • Making a spirited defense of the whole Ground Zero Mosque thing. Which we should note a couple of things about. One, it’s two blocks away. And two, it’s in FREAKING MANHATTAN, pretty much the busiest place in the world. Seriously, there’s so much crap there that there’s a strip club and a horse-betting kiosk within a block of the mosque’s planned site. We actually have an AOL News article coming out about this over the weekend. We’ll keep you posted. source
