Politics: Katie Couric confirms she’s quitting CBS Evening News

  • Farewell to Katie Couric: It was widely discussed recently, but now it’s official: the CBS Evening News anchor will be calling it quits, she confirmed in an interview with People. She helmed the network’s nightly news show from 2006 until now, replacing then-interim host Bob Schieffer. Couric made it clear that she’ll be back on the airwaves, though: “I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling.” We’re very interested to see where she lands, and wish her all the best. source

Offbeat: Breakdown: Yesterday’s ultra-viral hoax featuring Jenny, a.k.a. Elyse

  • anyone fooled by this needs to try harder. Jenny, the employee who quit her job via dry-erase board, was proven to be a hoax today. But then again, it did fool some people. We’re actually not disappointed. Anyone who looked at those photos would wonder why the quality of them was basically perfect, like they had been shot in a studio. Because they had been. This hoax flew through the Internet in a matter of hours, which leaves a lot of questions about both the girl (real name: Elyse “I’m freaking famous now” Porterfield) and the traffic she drew. So, let’s throw out some numbers.
  • 20 girls applied to an ad looking for an actress for the role; Elyse was the obvious choice
  • two the number of hours the photo shoot took – half of which was spent on waiting for a battery to charge
  • 421,000 total Facebook shares (whoa)
  • 2.5Mthe amount of traffic TheChive.com usually gets each month
  • 2.5M the amount of traffic TheChive.com got yesterday alone
  • 2.5M the amount of traffic TheChive.com got today (at last count)
  • » How has it worked out for Elyse? Well … her Facebook fan page is brimming with new fans. Like, 4,100 or so. While she claims to have gotten more marriage proposals than job offers, she did get a few of those, too. She should do a commercial with the Old Spice Guy. source

Tech: Microsoft loses two top geniuses who could stop hemorrhaging

  • The two dudes knocked out helped make the Xbox a hit. Robbie Bach and J Allard were two of the smartest guys working for Microsoft, and both left the company today in that much-hated method of change called corporate restructuring. Bach is retiring and Allard is quitting. While both claim that they’re simply moving on, it’s not a good sign for Microsoft, which, while still greatly profitable, is now playing catch-up in most of the categories it competes. Especially mobile. source

Politics: Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh to Congress, Obama: Drop dead.

  • There are better ways to serve my fellow citizens. I love working for the people of Indiana. I love helping our citizens make the most of their lives, but I do not love Congress.
  • Senator Evan Bayh • On his decision to leave Congress after two terms. His press conference today (which featured his son wearing perhaps the ugliest sweater ever) ripped hard on the gridlock of Congress, saying there was “too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem solving.” Even though he could’ve safely won his seat (and also put the Democratic party in a scramble), fears on his electoral status didn’t play a part in his decision. Crappy politics did. “If Washington, D.C. could be more like Indiana, Washington would be a better place,” he said. Oh, and he didn’t tell Harry Reid. source

Culture: Miley Cyrus: Blame gossip sites for my departure from Twitter

  • Everything that I type, Everything that I do, some gossip site makes it news.
  • Miley Cyrus • Discussing the nature of her leaving Twitter. It’s an unexpected departure, mainly because she did it so regularly and had so many fans. But an unintended side effect of those tweets was the way that the more direct, honest ones – about her weight, for example – turned into gossip. If some gossip site were talking about our site’s weight all the time, we’d be uncomfortable too. Instead, we have Christwire (hilariously) suggesting that our site’s founder is a criminal. • source

Music: Noel leaves Oasis. We’re sure he’s gonna look back in anger.

  • It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer. Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan.
  • Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher • On quitting the band his songwriting made famous. Holy crap. This is a big deal. Oasis holds a special, drunken fighting-with-siblings place in our hearts. We’ll miss them greatly. (Rejected headlines: “Oasis doesn’t live forever”; “Liam wasn’t Noel’s Wonderwall after all”; “Oasis explodes like a champagne supernova in the sky”) • source

Politics, U.S.: Fox News has an interesting angle on Sarah Palin’s resignation

  • … setting up a potential run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.
  • Fox News • In a report on Sarah Palin’s resignation, which she plans to complete at the end of the month. Not that we don’t see this as a possibility, but when someone abruptly resigns from their major post, is this really the first thing people think of? • source

Music: Pinch Me: Steven Page leaves Barenaked Ladies? Say it ain’t so!

  • These guys are my brothers. We’ve grown up together over the past twenty years. I love them and wish them all the best in the future.
  • Steven Page • In a note on the band’s Web site. Page will go solo, and the rest of the band will continue as a quartet. Page has had some personal drama lately, including an arrest and plea deal on cocaine charges – just before the band was going on tour to support a kids’ album. Oof. We admit, this is near and dear to our hearts because BNL was one of our favorite bands in high school. Sigh. Our cred’s gone. • source
