Culture: “Machete” never meant to be immigration statement, but kinda is

  • It’s kind of funny because it’s not really what the movie is about, and I didn’t want people to think that it was. I just felt like I had to say something about it so I cut that trailer. There’s so much grandstanding and those of us who live near a border know how unsolvable the issue really is.
  • Director Robert Rodriguez • On how his upcoming “Machete,” which he premiered at Comic-Con, somehow ended up in the middle in the immigration debate. That’s because he cut a version of the self-described Mexploitation film’s trailer that tackled the immigration debate. The film, which has stacked its cast since the days of the original “Grindhouse” fake trailer, has drawn some political blowback for the trailer, but considering the attention it’s drawn, it only makes us want to see the Danny Trejo career summation even more. source

Politics: Shirley Sherrod: Obama’s post-racial attempts got him in trouble

  • I guess because he’s a black president, for some reason, they felt you can’t talk about issues that affect just black people.
  • Shirley Sherrod • Discussing her conversation with Obama yesterday. While he didn’t apologize per ce, the call itself worked as an apology for her. She thinks that he’s making a bad move in trying not to focus on the issues of black people specifically: “I know they probably have to struggle with that. But I think they’re wrong. I think they could do more to advance unity if they could promote a discussion from that level.” source

U.S.: Ethics charges: So, what is Charles Rangel facing, anyway?

  • The charges are unspecified. The allegations, though … This sounds pretty bad for Charlie. According to the Sunlight Foundation, the longtime New York congressman reportedly omitted between $239,026 and $831,000 from his financial disclosures (assets either purchased, sold or held), and also reportedly had some shady dealings with AIG. He’s had a rough couple of years, and stepped down from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee back in March. Poor Charlie. source

Politics: Underhanded: The Daily Caller names names in Journolist exposé

  • While journalists are trained never to presume motive, Journolist members tend to assume that the other side is acting out of the darkest and most dishonorable motives.
  • Daily Caller reporter Jonathan Strong • In yet another piece about Journolist, the e-mail list run by Ezra Klein that forced Dave Weigel out of his job a few weeks back. The list has long been an off-the-record spot to vent. But The Daily Caller, which once had a member that was part of Journolist, isn’t following that, giving SPECIFIC examples and specific names, and likely hurting numerous journalists in the process. While some of the attacks were harsh and underhanded (including a whole conversation about shutting down Fox News), the fact is, off the record is off the record. And The Daily Caller isn’t bothering to respect that in its articles. Protip to Daily Caller: More RNC spending exposés, fewer attacks on fellow journalists. source

  • right Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government ran a video of this unknown USDA worker who claimed that she denied a white person help. The right gets angry.
  • left Fearing a political backlash in the wake of the whole NAACP/Tea Party thing, the USDA quickly fires her. Sherrod says the White House pulled the trigger.
  • right It comes out that the video was heavily edited by Breitbart’s folks, giving the right ammunition to attack the White House for firing her. They just can’t win. source

Politics: When The Onion plays it subtle, Tea Partiers get fooled

  • You’d think that the Onion logo on this years-old video would hint to people that this is actually a satire. Or the fact that keeps repeating the word “classified.” Or the fact that he’s clearly talking about flesh-eating zombies. But no. In fact, this clip has been repeatedly posted on Facebook as if it’s actually real and confirming the Modern Tea Party’s greatest nightmare. Too subtle?
