Politics: Rudy Giuliani knocks White House “over-concern” for 9/11 terrorists

  • Both in substance and reality, the war on terror in their point of view is over. There seems to be an over-concern with the rights of terrorists and a lack of concern with the rights of the public.
  • Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani • on the White House’s decision to try 9/11 terror suspects in New York City instead of elsewhere. Giuliani, of course, was the mayor during 9/11 and the initial recovery, and his words have a lot more heft in this conversation as a result. • source

Culture: New York: Please stop making examples of celebrities like Lil Wayne

  • First Plaxico, now the rap star. Not cool. Thanks in part to New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, the state has some of the strictest laws on the books when it comes to gun possession. Plaxico Burress at least shot off his gun before he got a two-year jail sentence for gun possession. Unfortunately for Lil Wayne, though, he was nicked with “attempted gun possession” and will face as much as a year. As a non-resident of the state, he was unaware of the law, but simply being unaware of the law is not a good enough reason. Not that we’re suggesting he should’ve been in possession of the gun, but jail time for this is unbelievable. For shame, New York state. source

U.S.: Know that terror plot? Yeah. Be careful on the metro train.

  • More suspects are out there. And they could be targeting mass transit. The feds are telling major metro systems across the country to be on their Ps and Qs after the arrest of Najibullah Zazi, who may have been plotting an attack on the New York Subway. CNN is currently reporting that investigators are after a dozen more people. So if you can, carpool. Or take the bus. source

U.S.: Harlem shop owner on killing robbers: “I did the only thing I could do”

  • I did the only thing I could do at that time. Tried as long as I could not to, tried to get out of it; they wouldn’t let me get out of it.
  • New York City shop owner Charles Augusto Jr. • On having to shoot suspects in a robbery in Harlem. He didn’t want to, but they started pistol-whipping an employee and making the situation escalate. He killed two and injured two others in the act of self-defense. He will not be charged. • source

Culture: Skateboarder Andy Kessler died of an insect bite. An insect bite.

  • Kessler wrote the book on skateboarding in NYC. From Central Park to random apartment complexes, he always found a spot to skate. He stayed with it, fighting back from an era of drug addiction to become an elder statesman for the sport, later opening up skate parks. source
  • Andy Kessler’s death was sudden. After getting stung by a wasp, he suffered an allergic reaction which led to a heart attack. How does this happen? Well, some people – 5% of the U.S. population – are susceptible to insect allergies. 40 die each year. Kessler, sadly was one. source

Politics, U.S.: Republicans criticize Obama for going out on a date

  • As President Obama prepares to wing into Manhattan’s theater district on Air Force One to take in a Broadway show, GM is preparing to file bankruptcy and families across America continue to struggle to pay their bills.
  • RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho • On the president’s choice to take a night off from his job and go out on a date with his wife Michelle in New York City. We think her argument that Obama’s taking the night off from one of the hardest white-collar jobs you’ll find is overblown (especially since Bush set a high mark for vacation days), but her side argument that Obama shouldn’t be spending taxpayer money on this is spot-on. Obama is taking the smaller plane, but it still costs lots of money to run it. • source

U.S.: Students at Intermediate School 238 lose Mr. Weiner to swine flu

In Hollis, Queens, students are mourning the death of Mitchell Wiener to swine flu – making him the fifth overall death in the U.S. and the first in New York City. He had been in the hospital in critical condition for half a week beforehand. So basically, this is very sad. source
