Politics: What does the “Ground Zero Mosque” neighborhood look like?

  • Our AOL News article yesterday about the “Ground Zero Mosque” hit a definite chord, based on the comments we saw here and the comments the piece got there. (Over a thousand!) It was only a matter of time before someone scoped out the neighborhood for some of the items we pointed out, and more. (Nice work, Daryl Lang!) And let’s just say that “New York Dolls” and “Off-Track Betting” are just as beautiful as we imagined. source

Politics: Our latest AOL News article tackles the “Ground Zero Mosque”

  • Sure, you’ve heard of the mosque, but have you heard of the “Ground Zero Fountain Pen Repair Shop”? Because there’s one of those near Ground Zero, too. Along with a couple dueling falafel carts. And a horse-betting business. Whether or not you feel the mosque should go there, it’s worth noting that said mosque is in a very dense part of NYC. That’s what our article tackles. Now, excuse us while we go get some falafel. source

U.S.: Vacation rentals in NYC no longer on the table thanks to new law

  • Craigslist entrepreneurs in NYC: Sorry. After saying he would veto the law, New York Governor David Paterson passed a law banning short-term vacation rentals in the city, forcing people to go to licensed hotels instead. If you go to Craigslist, you’ll see quite the cottage industry exists for this kind of housing. NYC mayor and noted iPad fanatic Michael Bloomberg supported the measure: “When housing designated for permanent occupancy is illegally converted into a hotel, unsafe conditions are created, the residential character of City neighborhoods is harmed and the supply of much-needed units of housing is depleted,” he said. Or, more likely, this cottage industry bloomed because hotels in NYC are super-expensive and out of whack with the rest of the country. source

Culture: Obit: Lady who got a really good kiss after World War II

  • Remember this lady? Remember this kiss? Of course you don’t. You weren’t in Times Square that day; you probably weren’t born. And based on a check of our demographics, you probably didn’t serve in World War II. But the nurse in this famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photo, Edith Shain, died Tuesday at 91. This lucky moment was never to be re-kindled. Some random guy, so happy about V-J Day, just came up and kissed her. His identity has never been discovered. If he’s alive, he’s probably thinking about the kiss right now. source
