U.S., World: Why is this Somalian pirate smiling?

We’re not sure, but he sure seems happy to be in New York facing a court halfway around the world. source

U.S.: A protest at NYC’s New School gets very, very ugly

Police says it didn’t pepper spray protesters critical of school president Bob Kerrey. Too bad the video says otherwise. source

U.S.: The WTC-replacing “Freedom Tower” gets a little less free

  • The fact is, more than $3 billion of public money is invested in that building, and, as a public agency, we have the responsibility to make sure it is completed and that we utilize the best strategy to make certain it is fully occupied.
  • Stephen Sigmund • Spokesman for the Port Authority, on changing the name of “Freedom Tower” to the not-as-free-sounding “One World Trade Center.” We’re sure some nutjobs are going to claim the name changed because Bush isn’t in office, but we personally blame the proliferation of rapping flight attendants. Because that makes just as much sense. • source

Culture: A hockey game broke out at an “America’s Next Top Model” tryout

  • It was beauty and bedlam. Officers don’t know what caused it, but chaos ensued at a tryout for “Top Model,” the Tyra Banks-helmed reality show, in New York yesterday. Six people were injured. Two sought medical treatment. Three others were arrested. For the love of God, someone involved with the show better have gotten that on tape, because that sounds like perfect reality show fodder. source

Offbeat: How to get rich: Get drunk, fall in the subway, lose your leg

  • Dude got a $2.3 million settlement. Brooklynite Dustin Dibble, 25, doesn’t even remember his apparently epic bender, but he has a pretty obvious souvenir from it in the form of a missing leg after a train hit him. His lawyers are pretty good, apparently: He won a lawsuit after they claimed the train had time to stop. There are worse ways to make your life savings. source

Biz, U.S.: Sky-high rents in NYC aren’t looking so sky-high anymore

  • We had a truly un-New York experience with our old landlord begging us to stay.
  • Tom Botts • a 39-year-old New York City resident who found a drastically different landscape for renting when he and his wife, Libbie Rice, went apartment-hunting. Deals were all over the place, and his old landlord even offered to cut the rent if they stayed. Tenants like Botts are finding significant deals, even free months of rent, in a recession-belabored market. • source

U.S.: “Sully” stays humble even after plane crash heroics

  • It was circumstances that put this experienced crew (in charge) of that plane on that particular day. We were simply doing the jobs we were trained to do.
  • Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger • the heroic pilot of the US Airways flight that crashed into the Hudson River in New York City earlier this month; everyone survived largely because of his heroics. Sullenberger was honored in his hometown of Danville, Calif. yesterday. • source
