Tech: Gizmodo says that iPhone lost in a bar isn’t fake, but actually real

  • The phone was remotely killed. The Daring Fireball dude says he called around and believes Apple lost a prototype. iTunes recognizes it as an iPhone. It uses MicroSIM, which no phones use (but the iPad 3G does). Most importantly, the guts of the phone are all labeled “Apple.” Holy crap. This is major. This may be the biggest leak to ever get out of Apple. source

Tech: It’s a “new known issue.” Well, that’s good to know. Thanks Twitter!

  • There is nothing our users can do to fix this issue at the moment. Don’t worry though! We have not lost any of your images. They will all come back soon.
  • A status message on Twitter’s help forum regarding the disappearance of background images and avatars • Which is essentially the equivalent of saying that they spilled beer on the server. But doesn’t Twitter use the cloud? We wonder what it’d be like to spill beer on a cloud. Would it just fall through? Would it freeze? Or would it create a frosty brew? The strange things we think of when we’re waiting for our #(^(!@& avatars to return to Twitter. • source

Sports: The Orange County Register’s Mark Whicker: I’m a freaking idiot

  • It was not my intention to do so. But it’s obvious that I miscalculated the effect the column on Jaycee Dugard, and the events that she might have missed during her captivity, had on those who read, buy and advertise in our newspaper.
  • Mark Whicker • On his column last Tuesday, which may go down in history as the most misguided sports column ever. In it, Whicker used Jaycee Dugard’s kidnapping and captivity as a hook to look back at the last 18 years of sports. The copy-editing staff understood why this might be a bad idea, giving the column this boring-as-nails headline: “Many odd things have happened in sports the past 18 years.” The next day, readers gave him a lashing for his idiocy. He then apologized. The editors also apologized, but it was still beyond boneheaded. It was downright sick. • source
