Tech: Microsoft loses two top geniuses who could stop hemorrhaging

  • The two dudes knocked out helped make the Xbox a hit. Robbie Bach and J Allard were two of the smartest guys working for Microsoft, and both left the company today in that much-hated method of change called corporate restructuring. Bach is retiring and Allard is quitting. While both claim that they’re simply moving on, it’s not a good sign for Microsoft, which, while still greatly profitable, is now playing catch-up in most of the categories it competes. Especially mobile. source

Tech: Lame: Microsoft kills innovative coulda-been-awesome Courier

  • In their defense, it was never technically announced as a real product. Last year, the Internet went aflutter over the idea of the Microsoft Courier, which turned the tablet concept into a book which focused less on consuming media but acting more like a journal where once could save scraps of content, take notes using a stylus and turn nerds into puddles of awe. Instead, the company killed it yesterday, choosing to focus their energy on the coming-soon Windows Phone 7 Series. Hopefully its memory endures, if not the product itself. source

Tech: Microsoft admits it screwed up search, focused on the wrong thing

  • Google owns the “long tail” results. MS is just trying to accept its niche. Why did Microsoft reboot its entire search engine last year? Simple. They realized it was focusing on the wrong thing, good results for obvious searches, when the real money was to be made in more obscure results. “On any given a month,” said Microsoft Bing manager Yusuf Mehdi, “one-third of queries that show up on Bing, it’s the first time we’ve ever seen that query. A huge chunk of those, we’ll never see again.” As a result, Bing has a different focus, one that involves partnerships with startups and depth on intelligent queries. source
