Tech: Laptop broken? Enroll in an Owensboro, KY public school

  • FREE Macbooks for kids in Kentucky! source
  • » We were generally supportive of the 2009 stimulus package, but aspects of it are starting to seem a bit questionable, to say the least. Case in point: 2,200 students and staff in the town of Owensboro, Kentucky will soon be enjoying a free Macbook Air, courtesy of the Recovery and Reinvestment Act. While we’re all for providing students with the technical competency needed to compete in the 21st-century global economy, you don’t really need to give everyone a Macbook Air to do that. The cheapest Air is $999; if we assume, for the sake of argument, that Apple gave Owensboro a 50% bulk discount, that’s still over a million dollars of federal money being spent so kids can have free laptops. Opponents of “wasteful government spending,” your Exhibit A is right here.

Biz, Tech: Apple’s 3Q earnings report overloaded with (mostly) good news

  • 91% increase in iPhone sales from a year ago (wow)
  • $20
    billion
Apple’s quarterly revenues, which happens to be a new record for them, by the way
  • $4
    billion
Apple’s quarterly profits, which is also a record for them – and up 70 percent (!); freaking show-offs
  • +28% increase in Mac sales year-over-year; not bad considering their light recent publicity
  • +28% increase in iPad sales from last quarter; pretty good but not particularly spectacular
  • -11% decline in year-over-year iPod sales, which admittedly was kind of expected source
  • » Investors somehow not impressed: Wait, what? Well, here’s why: They expected the increase in Apple’s iPad sales to be much higher, so as a result, Apple’s stock went down five percent in after-hours trading. You bastards can’t ever be impressed, can you?

Tech: Apple’s Magic Trackpad: For desktop users feeling left out

This wasn’t TOTALLY unexpected. In fact, the rumor mill had been suggesting this very idea for months – a trackpad for desktops. Neat. (Oh, iMacs also got a refresh.) source

Tech: Lenovo: Apple is totally letting us have the Chinese market

  • We are lucky that Steve Jobs has such a bad temper and doesn’t care about China. If Apple were to spend the same effort on the Chinese consumer as we do, we would be in trouble.
  • Lenovo founder and chairman Liu Chuanzhi • Suggesting Apple isn’t interested in the Chinese market very much, making it easier for the ThinkPad maker to gain a foothold. (He does say, though, that he thinks Jobs is a genius.) Apple, while not offering a direct rebuttal to the comments, notes that they plan on opening a bunch of stores in China by the end of the year. Is that codeword for “playing catch-up”? We think it is. source

Tech: Nice: Random Mac Mini redesign comes out of nowhere

  • Can we just say that this was the most neglected part of Apple’s entire lineup? Well, until today, that is. Apple redesigned the box to be used the way people actually use it – as a small, efficient server or as a beefed-up TV device, complete with all the necessary ports to make it a part of your living room. We approve. source

Tech: The Mac/PC debate works better when children explain it

  • “We’re different brands of computers.” “And we #)&)@&) hate each other.” Ah, the never-ending Mac/PC debate. Somehow it never gets old, especially in the hands of these 4-year-old Asian girls, who come to blows trying to explain why their computer is better. Hilarious, cute, and a bunch of other amusing things.

Tech: PC World: The Apple Tablet is a “mirage” that isn’t gonna happen

  • Let’s face it: The Apple tablet is a mirage created by legions of fanboys and tech dreamers. The closer you get to that mirage, the more you realize it’s not going to be there when you arrive. But then, off in the distance, an even brighter and more beautiful tablet is envisioned for a day that will never come.
  • PC World columnist Ian Paul • In an article titled “The Apple Tablet is Dead.” Paul suggests that the tablet is something of a driving factor for the fanboy audience than a real device. Though we’d like to remind Mr. Paul that a lot of people thought the same thing about the iPhone before it came out. With Apple, everything’s still on the table, even when it’s not – except for an App store that makes sense for developers. • source

Tech: Hackbooks/Hackintoshes a victim of latest Snow Leopard update

sadmac1010
  • You’ve been killed, hackbook. The newest version of Apple’s Snow Leopard had been rumored to lock out Mac using Atom chips – in other words, netbooks. And despite initial contrary reports, this actually turned out to be the case. Will it last? And will Apple just bite the bullet and get into the netbook market to kill this debate once and for all?source
