World: Qaddafi knows what caused the Tunisian collapse

  • question What caused the upheaval of the Tunisian government under President Ben Ali?
  • answer Wikileaks, aided by “lying ambassadors,” according to Libya’s Muammar el-Qaddafi. source
  • Corruption? Unemployment? A restricted press? Not according to Colonel Qaddafi. The Libyan leader, who has held power for over forty years, weighed in on Tunisia’s collapse, blaming “WikiLeaks which publishes information written by lying ambassadors in order to create chaos.” As The New York Times’ Robert Mackey observes, this may be a reiteration of a conspiratorial belief birthed from Iran’s leadership; that Wikileaks is acting as a propaganda arm of the United States, strategically leaking false cables to American benefit. But seriously, Julian Assange as a government shill? You’ve got a long road to hoe, Muammar.

Tech, World: Thanks, Libya: Bit.ly links could become a thing.ly of the past.ly

  • standing out, clever.ly A popular way to make your name stand out nowadays is to have the domain end in .ly, something hugely popular Twitter-centric services such as Bit.ly and Hootsuite (though its ow.ly and ht.ly services) have taken advantage of. The two-letter length also helps. Oh yeah, Mitt Romney uses it for his mitt.ly domain.
  • unfortunate.ly for themPerhaps this wasn’t thought through all the way, because the .ly domain is owned by Libya, a country not exactly known for its sparkling human rights record. And the country is upset about all the NSFW links that get shared on the services, putting entire business models in danger. Uh-oh. source

World: UK to Libya: Don’t celebrate the Lockerbie Bomber’s release

  • Any celebration of Megrahi’s release will be tasteless, offensive and deeply insensitive to the victims’ families. We have made our concerns clear to the Libyan government.
  • A spokeswoman for the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office • Telling Libya very publicly not to celebrate the anniversary of the release of Abedelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, the convicted Lockerbie bomber, who was released over seemingly terminal health issues, only to live the entire year after his release. As you might imagine, it’s a sore spot for the British. source

World: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi apparently hates the Swiss

  • Let us wage jihad against Switzerland, Zionism and foreign aggression. Any Muslim in any part of the world who works with Switzerland is an apostate, is against Muhammad, God and the Koran.
  • Muammar Gaddafi • In waging jihad against the Swiss. The famously neutral country has angered Gaddafi both personally and religiously. The problem started when Gaddafi’s son, Hannibal, as well as his wife Aline Skaf, was arrested in Switzerland for allegedly assaulting two servants. Gaddafi reacted by removing billions of dollars of financial interests from Switzerland, removing diplomats, refusing visas to Swiss citizens and pretty much overreacting. It then escalated to the point where Gaddafi and many other Libyan officials can’t travel into the country, to which Gaddafi responded by blocking many European countries from getting visas to enter Libya. Oh, and the minaret ban didn’t help either. Sounds like someone needs diplomacy. source

World: Was an oil deal behind the Lockerbie bomber’s release?

  • If so, expect a lot of angry people. The Sunday Times is reporting this morning that Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was released to Libya “in the overwhelming interests of the United Kingdom.” Apparently the Brits and Libya had some negotiations about oil that stalled, and a prisoner-transfer deal with Libya greased the wheels. Sounds sketchy to us. source

World: Scotland defends its release of the Lockerbie bomber

  • We understand that, we recognise that … But the process of compassionate release doesn’t depend on the guilt or innocence of the party. It’s an evaluation based essentially on the medical condition of the prisoner.
  • Alex Salmond, Scotland’s first minister • Responding to criticism by the U.S., most notably FBI Director Robert Mueller, for allowing Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi to go free for medical reasons. In case you’re wondering (we certainly were), Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom but it has its own legal system separate from the rest of the union. So, it wasn’t the U.K. that made this decision – it was Scotland. • source

U.S., World: The Lockerbie bomber is now a free (though very ill) man

  • Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was released by a Scottish court today. Megrahi, a Libyan national, is suffering from terminal prostate cancer and only has a short time to live. So the court set him free on compassionate grounds. He’ll likely be with family within hours. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was critical of the release before it happened, saying, “We are still encouraging the Scottish authorities not to do so and we hope that they will not.” The Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 killed 270 people in 1988. source
