World: Bad day at Breja as Libyan rebels retreat

  • ground gained by gaddafi: The Libyan rebellion is retreating in the face of heavy artillery and tank fire, as Muammar Gaddafi’s forces have retaken Breja. The rebels are heading back to Ajdabiya, which was where they were situated before the start of the NATO air strikes. As the international community mulls whether to actively provide arms to the rebel movement, Gaddafi’s ground attack seems to be prevailing despite being the lack of aerial support. That said, this conflict is nothing if not fluid, so it’s wise to stay abreast of new information. source

Culture: “Embrace Life”: Wrap your arms around pretentious seat belt ads

  • This approach to convincing people to wear seat belts is a little art-damaged, but it’s definitely effective. Next time we’re riding in a car, we’re going to get a mom and daughter to wrap their arms around us. Just look at how effective they are in this living room!

U.S., World: Should ship crews be armed against pirate uprisings?

  • Changes could be coming You might be wondering why, despite the long recent history of ships getting commandeered by pirates in the waters near Somalia, crews haven’t been armed. With this latest case involving the Maersk Alabama, expect some changes to happen – including a definition of terrorism stretched to include piracy, which would encourage on-board arms.
  • The argument against arms While this may seem to be a no-brainer to some, ship owners are very concerned that a failed attempt at stopping a pirate attack could lead to the death of the crew. Thus far, the pirates have been good at not harming the crews they overtake. Some say the real solution to the piracy problem is stronger maritime law enforcement of often-lawless waters. source

Offbeat: And now, Jack Cafferty talks about Michelle Obama’s arms. Creepy.

  • Her arms are becoming the stuff of legend. Who appears sleeveless on the cover of Vogue, let alone in front of a joint session of Congress while her husband delivers one of the most important speeches of his life? And the reviews were rave.
  • Jack Cafferty • CNN commentator, in an article titled “My crush on Michelle Obama.” Dude, she’s just the first lady! I mean, you realize she’s married, right? It doesn’t matter how many martinis you offer her. She’s not going to let you ask her out, Jack.  • source
