U.S.: Bizarro Hippie Rand Paul makes it look easy in Ky. primary

  • Somebody won really big tonight. Rand Paul was the “great hippie hope” or something, and most of the big news outlets barely even waited until after 8 p.m. to announce his victory in the Kentucky Republican primary. To liberals who want to throw stones at him, remember this: He’s still better than Jim “hold off unemployment benefits” Bunning. source

Politics: A little more context into Sen. Jim Bunning’s petty moves

  • Savings are depleted, jobs are tough to come by, and families still have expenses to manage. Unemployment benefits are the only thing keeping food on the table for a lot of Minnesotans. One Senator, acting alone, should not be responsible for holding their livelihoods hostage.
  • Sen. Al Franken • In a statement criticizing the move by Sen. Jim Bunning to block unemployment benefits. It’s not the only one he’s made, either. He also just blocked some key highway funds from getting distributed, for all effective purposes shutting down much of the highway system and putting thousands more out of work. Crooks and Liars has a nice explainer explaining why that move is really, really bad for millions of Americans. Despite the importance of agreeing on these moves – we know a lot of out-of-work journalists, for example, depending on that unemployment – some people are still supporting him on Twitter (though most aren’t, fortunately). Unbelievable. source

Politics: Jim Bunning has no problem blocking unemployment benefits

  • The senator reportedly said “tough #*@(” to another senator criticizing him. Last night, the lame duck Senator (and former baseball star) complained about missing a basketball game because he wanted to block extending unemployment benefits that much. He’s the only Senator holding up the bill. Why? He says that there’s no way to pay for it. Come on. This is NOT the bill to be playing politics on, man. source

U.S.: Remember that strange census worker hanging? It was a suicide

  • At least that’s what authorities are saying about the death of William E. Sparkman. Back in September, Sparkman was found dead in rural Kentucky. The crime was especially bizarre – he was hung and his body had the word “Fed” scrawled on it. Authorities now say that the case wasn’t a hate crime but a staged suicide in an attempt to earn a life insurance payout. Well, at least he wasn’t mauled by dogs like one unlucky Indiana census worker a few years back. source

Sports: The NCAA claims the U. Memphis hoops program broke the rules

  • one unnamed player who only played during the 2007-2008 season (Derrick Rose being the only guy who fits that description) apparently had a tampered SAT score
  • 38 number of games the university would forfeit if the allegations proved to be true; it’s a good thing coach John Calipari moved from Memphis to Kentucky recently source

Sports: Thanks U. of Kentucky, you made Memphis really sad. :(

  • John Calipari, a man torn by opportunity. The coach of the perennially-hot Memphis decided to leave for the bluegrass of Kentucky. It was a heart-wrenching decision for both Memphis, which has soared to great heights under Calipari’s helm, and Calipari himself, who will be coaching an iconic college basketball team that’s fallen on hard times. Memphis students and fans begged Calipari not to do it, but it was too late. Peace, brotha. source

U.S.: Kentucky’s in a scary, frozen state, and the National Guard’s helping

  • 92 counties have declared states of emergency in the wake of last week’s ice storm. That’s more than ¾ of the 120 total counties.
  • 4,600 troops from the National Guard were called up in the wake of the storm, which is responsible for at least 21 deaths since Tuesday. source
