Politics, U.S.: Arnold Schwarzenegger seems ready to fire up pot legalization

  • All those ideas of creating extra revenues, I’m always for an open debate on it. We ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana. What effect did it have on those countries? Are they happy with the decision?
  • California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger • On the possibility of legalizing pot. He goes on to note that his native Austria did not have a good experience with legalization. By the way, most people think pot should be legal as a way to raise state revenue. • source

Politics, U.S.: Indiana governor Mitch Daniels to GOP: Quit yer whining

  • I hear Republicans whining about, you know, the Democrats not being bipartisan. You know, ‘We weren’t included in this, we weren’t at the table in that.’ Well, get over it, that’s the way those folks are.
  • Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels • On the GOP’s current also-ran status, and why this might be a good thing long-term. He says it just provides them the opportunity to come up with alternative solutions to pitch. Even if you’re not at the big kids’ table, you can still be the smart kids. • source

Culture: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger may make a “Terminator” cameo yet

  • Despite lack of time, he’s willing “if they get the technology together.” The governator of California has a lot on his plate, such as a budget crisis, but he’s still willing to make time for a cameo in the movie that made him a big enough star to become governor of a state. Next month’s “Terminator: Salvation,” starring Christian Bale and already sporting killer trailers, may feature the original Terminator in a cameo role. We sure hope so, because that would rule. He agrees. “I think it’s cool to continue on with the franchise,” he said. source

Tech, U.S.: Gavin Newsom is assisting in Twitter jumping the shark even more

  • It’s official – running for Gov of CA. Wanted you to be the first to know. Need your help.
  • San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom • Who announced his candidacy for California governor today. It’s not nearly as lame as John McCain talking to George Stephanopoulos in a Tweeterview, but it’s still a crass political move at this point in the game. • source

Culture, U.S.: Sad news, everyone! Blago can’t travel to be on a reality show. :(

  • He’s on trial for a bunch of bad, bad things. Rod Blagojevich, the impeached Illinois governor who’s slowly evolved into a walking punchline, attempted to cash in on his notoriety by preliminarily joining the cast of “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” Unfortunately for Blago, the judge thinks it’s too soon for him to leave the country and go to Costa Rica to embarrass himself. “I don’t think this defendant in all honesty…fully understands the position he finds himself in,” commented U.S. District Judge James Zagel. You weren’t supposed to let him do it for him, James. You were supposed to let him do it for us! source

Politics, U.S.: Sarah Palin’s struggle with balancing national and state attention

  • The source of the greatest tension this year between the Legislature and the executive has been certainly the appearance that the executive is prioritizing her national image, her national brand, over the day-to-day operations of state government and the interests of the State of Alaska.
  • Mike Hawker • The Republican co-chairman of the Alaska House Finance Committee, on the strained relationship between the legislature and Sarah Palin. When Tina Fey’s parodied you on SNL and your daughter’s ex-boyfriend gets absurd amounts of attention, it’s hard to focus, isn’t it? • source

Politics, U.S.: Texas governor Rick Perry is talking secession. Pssh, whatever.

  • Tea parties make you say the craziest things. Perry, who spoke at a number of tea parties today, was in Austin when he loudly proclaimed, “Secede!” He said Texas could get so riled up that they might want to secede, but probably won’t. Well, why did you say it, then? Every state could want to secede. And you guys aren’t even Quebecers with your weird dialect of French. You have no good reason to secede. We don’t want to have to bring a passport when we go to SXSW, OK? source

Culture: Rod Blagojevich has fallen to the depths of celebrity reality TV. LOL.

  • Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has agreed to be on the next season of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” which is just hi-larious. The impeached ex-pol stands to make $80,000 a week on the show, but at the cost of any shame or personal integrity he had left. source
  • Unfortunately, there may be one thing standing in the way of him making bank on his notoriety. The show tapes in Costa Rica, and he needs to convince the judge presiding over his corruption trial to loosen travel restrictions. For the love of God, judge, please say yes! Pretty please? source

U.S.: The story that will not die, the Blago case, ropes in another guy

  • Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is on the hot seat now. Federal investigators have taken a larger interest in Jackson, son of a more famous Jesse Jackson and a Democratic congressman from Illinois. The day before former governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested, Jackson went to Blago in an attempt to sell him on appointing him to the seat. Whether that was through “I’m the right guy” truisms or through pay-for-play mechanisms, that’s what investigators hope to find out. Either way, he probably would’ve beat this guy any day of the week. source
