Tech: Eventually, Amazon’s Kindle runs into a hard, solid wall of DRM

  • A poor blogger found out the hard way. Dan Cohen of GearDiary found out the other day that some books he downloaded for his Kindle/iPhone had a limit to how many times they could be downloaded and on how many times they could be shared. Worse, it seemed this number was arbitrary and was, until now, not communicated to customers. After talking to a number of Amazon customer service reps, he confirmed it was set by publishers, though it was very confusing to get to that point. Granted, Cohen posts on a site that checks out tons of devices, so it’s possible that his case is extraordinary, but why is it even there in the first place? source

Politics, U.S.: Protip: Don’t get on NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg’s bad side

  • Reporter Azi Paybarah of the New York Observer dared to ask a question about the improving economy which seemed to undercut Bloomberg’s reasoning for running for a third term. It was an honest question. source
  • Bloomberg responded harshly, telling him, “When you have a serious question about the economy, I’d be happy to answer it.” He then ended the news conference by calling Paybarah a disgrace. LOL. source

Sports: Kenyon Martin isn’t accepting Mark Cuban’s cop-out apology

  • The world got to see it before the person who it was meant for got to see it. That tells you how that goes. I ain’t never known nobody apology to somebody through other people.
  • Denver Nuggets star Kenyon Martin • Who’s still just a little pissed about how Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban treated his mom, and even more pissed about the fact that Cuban posted an apology on his Web site rather than talk to him directly. Dude, but he’s an internet entrepreneur! He’s not supposed to talk to other human beings, unless he’s insulting them. • source

Politics, U.S.: Al Gore gets in Dick Cheney’s dramarama

  • I waited for two years after I left office to make statements that were critical, and then of policy.
  • Former veep Al Gore • Slapping fellow former veep Dick Cheney on the hand for trashing on the Obama administration almost immediately after leaving office. Cheney didn’t seem to talk quite this much when he was actually in office. • source

Sports: Jay Cutler says the Broncos never actually reached him

  • A simple, terse, “no” text message says it all. Cutler, who wanted a trade, and is now getting one apparently, did not get contacted repeatedly like the Broncos made it seem earlier today. Cutler’s agent, Bus Cook, in fact noted that they had only tried to contact him (not Jay, who noted the lack of contact via text message) on Tuesday, and the trade news was a bit of a shock. “I heard from Jay when he called to tell me he just saw on TV he was being traded,” Cook said. “They can spin it the way they want to spin it.” Draaaaaaaaama. source

Music: The Dresden Dolls’ Palmer does theater, Neutral Milk Hotel-style

  • It’s an original play about music and the Holocaust written by insanely talented drama students with musical accompaniment by me. My high school theater director, Steven Bogart, is one of my biggest artistic mentors and I’ve been trying to get back there since I left.
  • Amanda Palmer • The piano-smashing half of Brechtian punk cabaret popsters The Dresden Dolls, on her latest project – going back to her alma mater, Lexington High School in Massacheusetts, to compose the music for a play based on one of our favorite albums, Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.” If you’ve never heard it, you should – it’s an amazing, colorful and bizarre artistic interpretation of the life and death of Anne Frank, and a bold choice for a high school play. • source
