Yemen has its own short-term and long-term schemes to tackle terrorists anywhere in the republic that only call for intelligence and information coordination with other countries.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr Qirbi • Speaking to a government-run newspaper on his country’s plans for fighting terror. They claim the threat is exaggerated. In other news, exaggeration means something different than it did before, according to the Yemeni government. source
Western governments have until the end of the month to take Iran’s offer. Remember how the U.S. tried really hard to convince Iran to agree to a nuclear plan that limited their ability to create nuclear weapons? And how Iran pussyfooted around with them? Well, after ignoring the offer and missing a deadline, now Iran’s playing hardball, setting a counter-offer and saying the West has to agree or they’ll just do what they want. Great. source
He came. He did a quick deal. He left. That was how US President Barack Obama intervened in the global warming conference in Copenhagen and whether he saved it from total deadlock or condemned it to issuing a powerless piece of paper depends on your point of view.
BBC Correspondent Paul Reynolds • Discussing the nature of Obama’s quick deal-making in Copenhagen. A few interesting things about the conference: Obama dealt with China and a few other large but unexpected countries – India, Brazil, South Africa – but left Russia and the EU out of it (shockingly). Also, the forum may have just been the wrong choice for something this monumental. Family reunions this big tend to fall apart due to lots of infighting. source
Values such as tolerance, dialogue and respecting others’ religions should never be put to referendum.
Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki • Speaking to his Swiss counterpart about the referendum that led to a ban on minarets. He warns that there could be consequences for the country long-term. For those keeping score at home: Iran is 90% Muslim, but (despite the image of leaders being completely unaccepting of other religions and faiths) does allow Christian churches and Jewish synagogues to be built in the country. There have been complaints about this being difficult, though. Switzerland and Iran have a tight relationship, by the way, due to the Swiss acting as an intermediary between the U.S. and Iran. source
Sadly, the government of Afghanistan had become a byword for corruption. And I am not prepared to put the lives of British men and women in harm’s way for a government that does not stand up against corruption.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown • Discussing his plans for Afghanistan in fairly harsh terms. Considering Brown’s talking about Afghanistan right as Obama’s trying to figure out his own plans for sending troops to the country, his words carry extra weight. • source
