Politics: Chris Matthews sees only white tea leaves at GOP protests

  • “They’re all white. All of them, every single one of them is white.” Chris Matthews is a wee bit obsessed with the race of the Tea Partiers, noting that he doesn’t see a single non-white person in the mix. It’s a line begging for rebuke. And wouldn’t you look at that! There’s a couple black tea partiers, right on cue! source

Culture: KFC’s Aussie branch treads fine line between chicken and racism

  • Bad advertising idea No. 1: “Stuck in a situation where you’re surrounded by black/West Indian people? Just offer them chicken and everything will be OK!” KFC, as you might guess, is getting a firestorm of controversy for this Australian ad. Ouch. source

U.S.: Mom of nine gets sterilized without consent, sues, gets trashed on

  • I’m shocked at the virulence. It’s borderline bigotry against somebody that is on public assistance, against somebody that has more than 2.1 children, against somebody that doesn’t have a college degree.
  • Lawyer Max Borten • On the criticism his client, Tessa Savicki, has gotten after an article was released discussing her situation. Savicki, who is on public assistance, had surgery in 2006 to get a reversible form of birth control. Instead, doctors sterilized her without her written consent. Savicki, 35, has nine kids already – including children as old as 21 and as young as 3. source

Politics: Ron Paul isn’t afraid of standing up to Dick Cheney’s crazy

  • I think he had his eight years, and he’s caused a lot of trouble for our country and perpetuated a war in Iraq unnecessary and wrong-headed. I would say it would be best he not be so critical right now.
  • Rep. Ron Paul • Suggesting that Dick Cheney is out of his element in criticizing the Obama administration’s security policies. Granted, Paul isn’t exactly GOP leadership, but he is also somebody people know and also in Cheney’s party. So it’s interesting that he’s saying this about the guy. source

Offbeat: High schoolers don’t see humor in U. of Chicago’s great joke

  • Dear University of Chicago, It fills me up with that gooey sap you feel late at night when I think about things that are really special to me about you. Tell me, was I just one in a line of many? Was I just another supple ‘applicant’ to you, looking for a place to live, looking for someone to teach me the ways of the world?
  • A University of Chicago sample entrance essay • Which, in our estimation, is the most amazing thing ever. It was sent to high school students last week in an attempt to inspire them to come up with killer application essays ahead of the January 2 deadline. Somehow, though, some people don’t see the humor in this amazingly well-crafted essay and are criticizing its sexual overtones. Others are freaking out big time, afraid that their essays are really similar. WTF?! Enjoy it for what it is, guys! source

Politics: Obama’s staff ain’t fallin’ for Dick Cheney’s barbs this time

  • criticism Former veep Dick Cheney’s take on Obama: “He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won’t be at war.”
  • smackdown The administration’s take on Dick Cheney: “It is telling that Vice President Cheney and others seem to be more focused on criticizing the Administration than condemning the attackers.” Ouch. source

World: The U.S. says Iranians deserve to see their “universal rights”

  • We strongly condemn the violent and unjust suppression of civilians in Iran seeking to exercise their universal rights. Hope and history are on the side of those who peacefully seek their universal rights, and so is the United States.
  • White House National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer • Condemning the latest violent response to protests in Iran today. Four people died as a result of the protests by freedom-wanting, tech-savvy Iranians. This, by the way, is the first time people have actually died during protests since the original Iran election protests in June, which makes them all the more depressing. source

Politics: Fox News’ angle on Ben Nelson: He sold his vote for his state!

  • Do the twist! Saying that the abortion concessions weren’t enough, Fox News claims that Nelson sold his vote for health care to win kickbacks. “It’s pretty obvious votes have been bought,” Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said. Nelson did get Reid to agree to help pick up his state’s future Medicaid tab, at a cost of $45 million. Most other states will get their tab picked up, but only over a short period.
  • Fair & balanced Politico covers the issue differently – they note it’s the kind of concessionary agreement made with legislation like this. Nelson’s fellow Democratic Nebraska senator, Tom Harkin, makes a good point: “… it is going to be the impetus for all the states to stay at 100 percent. So he might have done all of us a favor.” That’s right, the Feds might pay the balance of Medicaid for everyone eventually.

U.S.: Was @military_mom right to tweet about her son drowning?

  • Please pray like never before. my 2 yr old fell in the pool.
  • Blogger @military_mom (a.k.a. Shellie Ross) • Regarding the drowning of her son. Many are up in arms about the fact that she tweeted about the incident half an hour after it happened. He died a few hours later. Our feeling? Twitter is just a communication mechanism like any other. It’s as easy to use as texting or phone calls, or any other mechanism you use. Twitter isn’t a faddish thing – Twitter is a communication mechanism. People can and will use it for this. Are we wrong? Let us know. (Either way, and let us be clear – this is a sad story and that doesn’t take away from that one bit. We actually find the New York Post story that brought up the issue to be quite disrespectful.) source
