World: Kyrgyzstan may arrest the old president for role in protester deaths

  • Because, hey, that seems reasonable. If you just took over a former Soviet Bloc country in a coup, would you let the old guy get away? That’s what interim leader Roza Otunbayeva is considering. She may charge ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in the deaths of 81 people by soldiers loyal to him. She makes it clear, however, that her country does not want to do it by force. But others, however, may not be so gracious. “There are people who want revenge,” she says. “It’s a very sensitive situation. You must understand that we won’t be able guarantee his security ourselves.” source

World: The Vatican: Oh, that letter from the Pope was a form letter

  • There may be some overstep and rush to judgment going on here. … Moreover, while that proceeding was ongoing, there is no known report of the priest having re-offended.
  • Vatican lawyer Jeffrey Lena • Regarding that letter that suggested current pope may have had some connection to the sex-abuse scandals dogging the Catholic Church for the last 30 years. Lena claims the letter is “a form letter typically sent out initially with respect to laicisation cases.” The priest in question, who personally asked to be defrocked, was put on probation for three years after pleading no contest to tying up and raping two pre-teen boys. After he was finally defrocked in 1987, he was convicted of other sex crimes as a civilian. Yeah. This is a mess. source

World: Catholics jump on Jews, Anglicans jump on Catholics, Buddhists left out

  • An institution so deeply bound in to the life of society suddenly becoming – suddenly losing all credibility. That’s not just a problem for the church, it’s a problem for everybody in Ireland, I think.
  • Church of England head Rowan Williams • Regarding the scandal surrounding the Catholic Church of Ireland, which in a lot of ways mirrors the one the Vatican is facing. Of course, Williams immediately regretted saying it, because, well, it’s a controversial thing to say! Can we just have a moratorium on religious types saying controversial things about one another? source

  • one Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins told people to stop donating to the RNC, calling them tone-deaf for their strip club drama.
  • two Sarah Palin requested that her name get taken off the speaker list for a RNC event near the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.
  • three If all that stuff isn’t bad enough for the RNC, a fund-raising mailer released by the group directed readers to a sex chat line. Oops.

Tech: Google points out more cyber-suppression, this time in Vietnam

  • The controversy stems from a bauxite mining project backed by China. Late Tuesday night, Google noted a series of cyber-attacks which seem to be targeted at Vietnamese people from around the world. While the attack isn’t as sophisticated as the China attack which led to Google leaving that country last week, it certainly left a mark on what Google calls “an important and emotionally charged issue in the country.” source

Politics: Harry Reid has a Tea Party competitor. Did Harry put him there?

  • Some Tea Party members thinks he was planted by Reid’s buddies. Jon Scott Ashjian, who just declared as a candidate in the 2010 election for Harry Reid’s Nevada senate seat, is drawing more than a little controversy. “Nobody in the Tea Party knows who he is. He didn’t know any of the principles of the Tea Party,” said Danny Tarkanian, one guy who’s gunning for the Republican nomination (and whose dad is a famous former UNLV basketball coach). Sue Lowden, the GOP frontrunner, says she’s never seen him at a Tea Party event. Strange. source
