U.S.: CIA: We only burn and shred documents because it’s the green thing to do

  • The Central Intelligence Agency’s practice of shredding and burning classified papers—often referred to in movies and books as “burn after reading”—is one of several ways the CIA conserves energy, reduces its impact on the environment, and lowers costs through its sustainability efforts.
  • The CIA • In an Earth Day posting to their website. The fact that the CIA actually said this is much funnier than any joke we could hope to make, so we’ll just let it stand. source

Politics: When The Onion plays it subtle, Tea Partiers get fooled

  • You’d think that the Onion logo on this years-old video would hint to people that this is actually a satire. Or the fact that keeps repeating the word “classified.” Or the fact that he’s clearly talking about flesh-eating zombies. But no. In fact, this clip has been repeatedly posted on Facebook as if it’s actually real and confirming the Modern Tea Party’s greatest nightmare. Too subtle?

U.S.: The military is freaking about the dude who leaked to Wikileaks

  • If he really had access to these cables, we’ve got a terrible situation on our hands. We’re still trying to figure out what he had access to. A lot of my colleagues overseas are sweating this out, given what those cables may contain.
  • An American diplomat • Discussing the potential awfulness of Wikileaks releasing  260,000 diplomatic cables that jailed Specialist Bradley Manning reportedly gave to the site. Manning had a fairly high level of access; there might be some fairly sensitive information in the wires. Manning, by the way, is the dude that leaked the 2007 clip that showed a bunch of Iraqi citizens getting killed, along with two Reuters employees. Why couldn’t Bradley have just gotten into quarterbacking football games like his old brothers Peyton and Eli? source

U.S.: The reported source of that crazy Wikileaks video is in custody

  • Hillary Clinton, and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning, and find an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available, in searchable format, to the public.
  • SPC Bradley Manning • Regarding some of the documents he sent to Wikileaks. Manning was arrested two weeks ago for reportedly leaking a number of documents to the site, most notably this video, in which a number of innocent civilians are killed in a helicopter attack. Manning was turned in by a hacker, and has not been charged yet. But holy crap. This guy gave Julian Assange and his boys a lot of classified info. source

U.S.: Obama: If we have to, we’ll classify these torture photos

  • Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham regaled the knowledge to Congress. Have a desire to see some pretty crazy stuff that the U.S. did to imprisoned terror suspects? Possibly just to see if you can take how disturbing these photos are reported to be? Well, good news, kids. You can’t see them. Apparently the Obama administration is going to classify these photos if it prevents them from getting out. He prefers an act of Congress, but isn’t afraid to just block them himself. Good for them. We don’t need to see terror porn. source

Politics, U.S.: Five reasons that NYC Air Force One blunder was so stupid

  • Federal, state and local authorities knew of the “flying photo op” but didn’t tell the public it was happening. WTF guys? source
  • It was classified – so much so that NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t know about it. Yeah, that’s genius. source
  • It happened in the middle of the morning, when everyone was at work in skyscrapers. PANIC! Evacuate!! AHHHH! source
  • It’s a plane. Flying low. In New York City. In a part of the city where two planes famously hit two buildings. *forehead slap* source
  • It’s an example of how vanity can get in the way of public safety, and it’s safe to say that officials shouldn’t forget that. source
