Tech: Speaking of Google, their sucky tech support is catching up with them

  • They may have been clouded by their own personal experience and way of thinking about how they deal with technology.
  • Forrester Research analyst Charles S. Golvin • Regarding Google’s tech support troubles with the Nexus One. What’s the problem? Well, their support mechanism is designed to be an e-mail based process that takes a couple of days to answer, but people with $529 phones want a lot more than that. As a result, forums are flooded with people complaining about problems with the phone. The lesson for Google? A live person is more useful than an e-mail. Sometimes. Especially with hardware. source

Tech: Google’s Nexus One most notable for what it doesn’t have

  • By offering a lineup of phones that is essentially carrier-independent, Google has separated the two previously interlocked parts of the phone/plan-buying experience—phone selection and carrier selection—and has done so in a way that threatens one of the most important enablers of carrier lock-in.
  • Ars Technica writer Jon Stokes • Making a pretty good point about why the Google Nexus One isn’t that big a deal, but the site where it’s being sold totally is. Google’s lack of carrier dependence is a big deal – it’s an active attempt to break the carrier/phone lock-in which has hurt consumers for years. It’s just a modest step – the Nexus One really only fully works with T-Mobile – but it’s still one that could make consumers happier and phone service non-crappy. Are you listening, AT&T and Apple? source

Tech: Poll: Google’s possibly game-changing Nexus One phones

  • Reports yesterday suggested that Google’s been working on a new phone, called the “Nexus One.” Beyond being built on an Android base, it’s reported to have a very basic feature which could be a game-changer: It’s an unlocked cell phone. Which means that people can use it on any carrier they want, with no contracts. Do you think this is enough to stand out in the market? Vote above. source
