Sports: Selection Sunday’s feel-good story: North Dakota State

  • It’s so new to everybody up here that we’ve been bombarded by fans asking about who we’re going to play. It’s a learn-as-you-go process.
  • Saul Phillips • Coach of North Dakota State, who made the tourney in its first year of eligibility after winning the Summit League title on Tuesday. Many of the seniors redshirted their first year on the off-chance that this would happen. So it’s kind of like a dream, or something. They’re 14th-seeded and taking on 3rd-seeded Kansas. • source

Sports: Amusing catfight #2: Shaq Vs. Stan Van Gundy

  • Flopping to me is doing it more than one time, and I realized when I tried to take the charge, as I went down, I realized that that play reminded me of his whole coaching career.
  • Shaquille O’Neal • On allegations by Stan Van Gundy that Shaq flopped during a game against Van Gundy’s Orlando Magic. O’Neal went further, saying that his former Phoenix Suns coach was a “master of panic” that screwed up their playoff run last season. Best part: He repeated his comments for members of the press who were late to hear him say it the first time. • source

Sports: Stephon Marbury: Knicks drama over, are the Celtics next?

  • That’s what appears to be the case. Marbury spent months embroiled in drama with his former team, who worked out a buyout with him yesterday. He hasn’t been on the basketball court lately as a result of the drama. The Celtics seem to be his next spot. While Boston themselves wouldn’t comment, Marbury told the Boston Globe he was “excited about the new beginning.” Personally, we blame the Starburys. source

Sports: Life can be unfair sometimes: LeBron James loses his triple-double

  • One of the rebounds wasn’t his. The Cleveland Cavaliers star’s most recent triple-double, against the Knicks on Wednesday, was a show-stopper – he had 52 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Well, that is, until the league gave one of those rebounds to teammate Ben Wallace after a review of the game. It would’ve been the first 50-point triple-double since 1975 had it stood. Do you always have to kill the fun, NBA? source

Sports: How notable is Pat Summit’s college coaching feat?

  • She’s better than everyone, even the guys. Summit, Tennessee’s longtime coach, is the first person – male or female – to hit 1,000 wins in coaching college basketball. The next closest is Bob Knight, who got to 900 wins in more time (and by throwing more chairs) than it took Summit. It’s a fact not lost on her. “Wow,” Summit said after winning. “This may be a little hard for me.” source
