Culture: The Betty White “Saturday Night Live” episode: Full of win

  • Her one-liners are pretty priceless. How did the 88-year-old Betty White get on “SNL” anyway? Facebook, of course. She gives the site lots of credit, but gets in a lot of ribbing in the process. “In my day, seeing pictures of people’s vacations was considered a punishment.” Many of the sketches this time were pretty stellar.

Culture: Suburban family raps about playdates, driving swagger wagons

  • This commercial is awesome for lots of reasons. The biggest reason? It’s directed by Jody Hill of “The Foot Fist Way” and “Observe and Report.” The other reason? It’s a suburban family rapping about being a suburban family.

Tech: Rube Goldberg would be proud of this Google Chrome ad

  • OMG OMG THAT’S FAST! This Google Chrome ad was shot using a 2700 fps camera to show how fast the rendering speed of the pages were. And in every case used here, it was faster than lightning. This advertising campaign is nothing but win. source

Offbeat: “Will it Shred?”: The poor iPad sucks as a skateboard, just an FYI

  • Oh, the agony. This awesome parody of the “Will It Blend” series of videos takes an iPad and tries to turn it into a skateboard. We bet it would’ve worked better had they turned the thing upside down and skated on the non-glass side.

Culture: Project worthy of kick-starting: Nicolas Cage in comic book form

  • NOT THE BEES, NOT THE BEES! A good friend of ours, Todd Webb (he of musical project Seamonster and illustrating Apples in Stereo side projects for kids) has a dream. He wants to take some time off from a day job to create a killer new comic book about Nicolas Cage (who, beyond starring in good/awful movies, is a bizarre human being), and he needs your help. Hence, he’s started a Kickstarter project. Throw $25 bucks in, guys. We want to see “NICOLAS CAGE! THE COMIC BOOK EXPERIENCE” become a real thing. source

Tech: Lame: Microsoft kills innovative coulda-been-awesome Courier

  • In their defense, it was never technically announced as a real product. Last year, the Internet went aflutter over the idea of the Microsoft Courier, which turned the tablet concept into a book which focused less on consuming media but acting more like a journal where once could save scraps of content, take notes using a stylus and turn nerds into puddles of awe. Instead, the company killed it yesterday, choosing to focus their energy on the coming-soon Windows Phone 7 Series. Hopefully its memory endures, if not the product itself. source

Offbeat: ChatRoulette’s second celebrity: Speed illustrator Paz Bernstein?

  • While Merton was getting all of the attention, talented illustrator Paz Bernstein was hopping on ChatRoulette and drawing people live, on the fly, using a Wacom tablet. The fact that these illos are so well-done in such a short amount of time speaks highly of his abilities. And hey, now that Merton’s kinda faded a bit, maybe you can have a chance to shine, Paz. Oh, check out the dude’s portfolio. It’s pretty good and wide-ranging. source
