Tech: Not news: Apple does something stupid with the iPhone app store

politics1109a
  • Are these caricatures offensive? Apple seems to think so. And poor Tom Richmond’s got hundreds of hours worth of hard work wasted thanks to the decision. Richmond, an illustrator, helped design a political app called “Bobble Rep” which shows every member of congress (even poor non-vote-getting Eleanor Holmes Norton!), or 540 (!) in total. And Apple rejected the app because they said Richmond’s drawings could “be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory.” And politics isn’t even the issue – the app is non-partisan. Worst decision Apple’s ever made? Maybe.source

Tech: Apple CEO Steve Jobs, as you’ve rarely seen him before

Fortune Magazine recently named Steve Jobs the CEO of the Decade, an obvious choice. But what isn’t obvious are some of the cool photos in this gallery. (h/t TUAW) source

Tech: Lame: Apple’s trying to block hacked Macs from its architecture

  • Have an Intel Atom Netbook? It won’t work in the next Snow Leopard update. That’s what Mac hacker Stellarola, behind the OSx86 hacking method, notes. “In the current developer build of 10.6.2,” he writes, “Apple appears to have changed around a lot of CPU related information. One of the effects of this is Apple killing off Intel’s Atom chip.” That means a lot of FrankenMac netbooks could be left out in the cold in the next version of Snow Leopard. *shakes head* We just don’t understand Apple’s inexplicable motives sometimes. source

Tech: Thanks to Google, Lala’s founders probably have this song on repeat

Celebrate good times, come on! Google just decentralized the whole music industry, and Lala is going to be the big winner. We heard rumblings of a Google-search-based music service last week, but now it's official, and boy, does it make walled gardens look silly. Other services (like MySpace's iLike) will get the nod too, but Lala will be the biggest beneficiary of the service, which will allow full-song samples to play from doing a search for either a song or (this is pretty cool) a lyric. Watch out, Apple and Amazon. source

Tech: Dear Apple: Please don’t load OSX up with annoying ads

  • They applied for a patent to do just that. Yikes. Word on the street is that Apple applied for a scary-sounding patent which would allow them to place advertisements within a reduced-cost version of their operating system. The ads would be audiovisual in nature and would limit system functionality when playing. May we just say to Steve Jobs and company: Are you out of your )#&(!)(# mind? source

Tech: We’re convinced Apple’s Magic Mouse is gratuitous nerd porn.

  • We know, we know. There have been a lot of tech-oriented articles on the site today. But that’s because there’s been a lot of really awesome tech toys on the radar today. But really, the biggest one is Apple’s new Magic Mouse, which combines the multitouch technology the company has been flaunting on the Macbooks for nearly a year with the Mighty Mouse, a mouse that sounded like a better idea than it actually was (because the tiny ball didn’t live up to the hype). But watching this video, we’re convinced that this device is purely pornographic. Magic Mouse? More like Magic Fingers.source
