Tech: Apple and Motorola lawsuits more annoying than anything

  • All these lawsuits between Apple and Motorola are silly. In the latest suit (a counter-suit, even), the iPhone maker sued Motorola for using multitouch technology (among other things which Apple owns patents for) in nine of its phones, including each of the popular Droid models. These suits are excuses for each company to get in the other’s hair, and basically do nothing useful. Honestly, if Apple was really serious about fighting these claims against their multitouch technology, they would’ve sued when the first Droid phone came out. Now, it just seems like a vindictive attempt at leverage. source

Tech: Get of the week: Engadget’s PlayStation Phone story (not bad, guys!)

  • Can’t you hear the fanboys squealing? This device was made for them. This get by Engadget is nearly as awesome as Gizmodo’s iPhone leak. Well-played, kids. And to Sony: This is a very smart way to get people to use your phones. source

Tech: Android making dramatic inroads in smartphone share

  • 3.9% Android’s worldwide market share at the end of 2009
  • 17.7% Android’s projected market share by late 2010 source
  • » And it gets better: Slowly but surely, Android is gunning for the 900-pound gorilla in the market, RIM. In the most recent quarter, Android had sold 27 percent of all smartphones in the past six months, topping iPhone’s 23 percent share and closing in on BlackBerry’s 33 percent share. Of course, as nobody ever notes in any of these articles – ever – Google offers up their OS for free and sells it on a variety of models sold by numerous companies. To compare, Apple sells two iPhone models for high margins. Of course Google’s going to own the market.

Tech: Google vs. Oracle: One giant sues another over Java

  • In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly, and repeatedly infringed Oracle’s Java-related intellectual property. This lawsuit seeks appropriate remedies for their infringement.
  • An Oracle spokesperson • Discussing the lawsuit the company, which recently bought Java maker Sun, filed against Google over their use of Java code in their developer kit for Android. This is pretty bad for a lot of reasons – the most important being that lawsuits like this usually involve two-bit operations suing large companies over patents. In this case, Oracle is as big and respected as Google. While we’re guessing Oracle just wants a piece of the pie, this could end poorly for all involved. source

Tech: Microsoft resorts to paying developers to make mobile apps

  • Translation: We’re desperate to play with Google and Apple. In a pretty implicit admission that they’re playing catch-up, the company plans to pay developers to help give Windows Phone 7 an early push. Why this strategy? Well, some developers may not be willing to program for an untested platform if they’re not convinced people are going to use it. It’s a good idea for Microsoft, but they can only get away with it because they’re Microsoft. source

Tech: Daring Fireball: Microsoft the odd man out in smartphone market

  • Microsoft can’t undercut Android on price, and it seems increasingly unlikely that they can beat Android in terms of features or experience. They didn’t warrant even a passing reference from Google at I/O. No chance, indeed.
  • “Daring Fireball” blogger John Gruber • Regarding Microsoft’s also-ran status in the phone market. Gruber argues that MS’s entire model hinges on the idea that they’ll monopolize the smartphone market, and since they’re far behind Apple and Google already, they don’t have a chance of succeeding. Gruber does say, however, that Google and Apple’s competition in the space is healthy and Google has some definite advantages over Apple right now. Hilariously, he also compares the iPad to a teenager that shouldn’t need its parents, but does. source

Tech: FTC to Google: OK, you jerks can acquire AdMob

Google went through months of back-and-forth about the acquisition, which kinda seemed silly after Apple made it clear they’d have competition. source
