Politics: Problematic: The New York Times missed ACORN – and Van Jones

  • They didn’t cover ACORN until it was simmering for a full week. NYT Public Editor Clark Hoyt put up an article this weekend picking up the pieces left by the paper essentially ignoring two of the biggest news stories of the last month – the resignation of Van Jones and Congress’ removal of ACORN’s federal funding. Apparently, it’s become clear that editors at the paper don’t watch Fox News. “Some stories, lacking facts, never catch fire,” Hoyt writes. “But others do, and a newspaper like The Times needs to be alert to them or wind up looking clueless or, worse, partisan itself.” The solution? Have an editor follow the blogosphere drama beat. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Right-wing conspiracies and radical revolutionaries

  • Clinton’s conspiracy Bill Clinton thinks Obama’s facing a right-wing conspiracy, he claimed on “Meet the Press.” He says it’s not as big as it was when he was president, but it’s more vicious.

  • Fawning over a pimpJames O’Keefe is in disbelief that his ACORN-trashing videos had such a massive impact. He describes himself as a “radical revolutionary” on Fox News.

  • Robert Gates is safeWhen George W. Bush was still president, the defense secretary had a “countdown clock” on his desk. It’s gone now. He’s there as long as he wants to be.

Politics: ACORN’s suing those filmmakers for making their lives suck

  • And really, they should. Those guys were jerks. ACORN has been battered, beaten, and shamed in the press and politically. And it was all for some out-to-shame videotapes. Now, they’re fighting back. The organization has filed a lawsuit against filmmakers James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles along with Breitbart.com LLC, the Andrew Breitbart-led company that owns BigGovernment.com. ACORN says the duo never obtained consent from the now-fired employees they showed helping with their faux-prostitution scheme in Baltimore. It’ll be interesting to see where the suit goes. source

Politics: Will ACORN’s dramarama hurt Obama? Probably not.

  • unlikely Some conservatives want the stink of the ACORN scandal to rub off on Obama. The president has long-ago ties to the organization.
  • likely More likely is that, since Obama isn’t actually tied to the scandal, it’ll merely reinforce conservative opinions on Obama. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Obama was on a lot of Sunday talk shows

  • Avoiding ACORN While admitting that what he saw on the prostitution video was distasteful on ABC’s “This Week,” we’ve never seen Obama so quick to avoid answering a question, ever.

  • On health care’s toneWhy is the health care debate so vitriolic? On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Obama attacks the 24-hour news cycle, saying that controversy the media’s driving factor.

  • No Illegal ImmigrantsOn CNN’s “State of the Union,” Obama says illegal immigration is an enforcement issue – one easily solved by verification. There’s a nice rip on the GOP at the end.

U.S.: ACORN’s top nut says she’s “outraged” by the pimp video

  • Any organization is not entirely perfect. I was outraged by it. Everyone should be, and I can understand how the Congress was also.
  • ACORN Chief organizer Bertha Lewis • On the video that completely decimated her organization’s reputation. She says that she’s looking into reforming the organization, and that anyone who’s “too stupid” to realize why stuff like this is a bad idea will be let go. In other news, Obama also favors an investigation into ACORN. Great job, wannabe pimps. • source

U.S.: The smear campaign against ACORN: Lawsuits and losses

  • Breitbart’s big splash The campaign against ACORN was first posted by BigGovernment.com, which just launched and made a huge initial splash with the video. The site is run by Andrew Breitbart, who’s probably best known as the other guy working on Drudge Report.
  • ACORN hit – hard As a result of the faked prostitution video, the Senate voted yesterday to deny funding for housing and community grants. The vote went 83-7, which is pretty much a death sentence for the organization. All because someone wanted to be Borat.
  • A lawsuit’s comingAnd for what it’s worth, James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles targeted the organization. Giles says she “saw the ACORN Housing location in Baltimore as a target — the den of a giant corrupt lion.” ACORN plans to sue both Fox News and BigGovernment.com. source

Politics: Max Headroom: How did our political discourse turn into mush?

  • ACORN scam artists? The two people behind the ACORN prostitution video make themselves sound like the biggest douchebags ever, based on this Fox News video. Even if ACORN screwed up, these guys were TRYING to get them to screw up.

  • Tea party insanityNow, we’re not saying that all conservative activists are like those shown in this video, but the first two minutes of this video are really eye opening as to how far on the fringe many of these activists really are. Yikes.

  • Axelrod: They’re wrongTop Obama adviser David Axelrod says flatly that these conservative activists overtaking Washington are simply “wrong” on the health care debate. We wouldn’t go that far. Their voices should be a part of this debate, too.

U.S.: ACORN and the Census: No longer working together

  • Glenn Beck strikes again. Thanks to this video and a bunch of other reasons, the U.S. Census has severed its relationship with community organizers ACORN. It was a number of things, but this video above, which shows the organization’s D.C. and Baltimore offices helping a woman pretending to be a prostitute, was the tipping point. “Their affiliation caused sufficient concern with the general public,” said Census Bureau spokesperson Stephen Buckner. source
