U.S.: Way to go, doofus: A Slate error fell into Obama’s health care speech

  • Here at Slate, we correct errors quickly and conspicuously, and usually Slate readers alert me almost instantly whenever I goof (which I try very hard not to do). But nobody told me about this blunder.
  • Slate writer Timothy Noah • Describing the series of events that led a factually-flawed detail from one of his articles to wind up in Obama’s health care speech. Dude, it’s the president. THE PRESIDENT. You’re supposed to not screw up those sorts of things. In all seriousness, the fact revolved around the plight of Otto Raddatz, whose insurance was canceled after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Noah said he died as a result. In reality, the Illinois attorney general’s office went to bat for him and he eventually got a life-extending surgery. • source

  • If you wanted the government to tell you using Facebook is smart, here you go. Apps.Gov is the U.S. government’s attempt to give a seal of approval to cloud computing – that nebulous internet thing that most people use on a daily basis without even realizing it. What’s amusing to us, beyond the useful productivity apps that the General Services Administration offers for purchase, is that they have a whole page devoted to social media. On this page, they tell you what you’ve already known for years if you have even a minor amount of technical knowledge: Wordpress, Facebook and YouTube (but surprisingly, not Twitter) are awesome! Thanks for the tips, brah. source

  • Now we hear it’s not real. She is causing herself embarrassment because it’s her first year here. She says all this and it’s not true.
  • Hofstra University student Monique Alvarado • On hearing that a fellow student’s rape allegations were untrue. The unnamed student claimed five men brutally assaulted her in her dorm room – and those men were named and arrested. Alvarado’s words were echoed by fellow student Chris Blue in reference to a Hofstra student who was arrested: “The young man’s life is still going to be ruined. The girl lied about a serious thing.” • source
