U.S.: Trying to bomb a plane: One of the dumber ways to celebrate Xmas

  • UPDATE: THE passenger was trying to blow up the flight. Today, at the Detroit Metro airport, a flight that was headed from Amsterdam to the saddest metro area in the country ended when one of the passengers tried – and failed – to set off a firecracker-like device on the plane after landing. Fellow passengers stopped the attacker, who was reportedly Nigerian, had Al-Qaeda ties and was on the no-flight list. source

U.S.: Christmas gut-punch: Salvation Army major killed in front of kids

  • My heart goes out for the family, losing their dad, and I guess having to witness it during this time of year. It’s definitely going to be hard on the kids.
  • Pulaski County Coroner Garland Camper • Regarding the death of Salvation Army Maj. Philip Wise, who was robbed, shot and killed outside of a Salvation Army facility on Christmas Eve in North Little Rock, Arkansas. U.S.: Merry Christmas! Here’s a trucker complaining about the weather

  • The wind is killer, especially when you’re empty. Anything that’s boxed, like a refrigerator trailer like I have … becomes like a giant sail in the wind.
  • Trucker Jim Reed • While stopped in Omaha. Reed is trying to drive through a rough winter storm that’s covering the Midwest and Plains states this morning. Parts of Oklahoma, the Dakotas, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Texas have blizzard warnings in effect, according to the National Weather Service. Good luck out there today, guys. source

U.S.: The controversial military rule on pregnancy lasted less than a week

  • Well, that didn’t last long, guys. It’s a Christmas miracle! Just days after news broke about Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo’s new rule on pregnant soldiers in Iraq, the policy was removed. The policy would’ve pushed a court-martial on any soldier who was pregnant while on duty, or impregnated a soldier on duty. Try explaining that one to civilians, and you see the problem. source

U.S.: Mother nature hates us and wants us to suffer on Xmas Eve

Dear weather, we know we can’t control you, but if you’re gonna storm, mind waiting until it’s really cold, so it’s at least snow, not freezing rain? Thanks. source

U.S.: Campaign contributions didn’t affect the vote that much, it seems

  • $9.27 million the amount Republican John McCain has gotten from the health care industry; Orrin Hatch and Mitch McConnell were also well-compensated
  • $8.34 million the amount Democrat John Kerry got; Max Baucus (the bill’s biggest influencer) and Arlen Specter also got slightly bigger paydays than Hatch & McConnell source
