Politics: FAA shutdown: Ray LaHood speaks up for furloughed workers

  • They talk a lot about jobs. They give good speeches about it. I want them to walk the walk. Put hard-working Americans to work so they can get a paycheck just like Congress is receiving on their vacations.
  • Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood • Offering up some harsh words on the situation with the FAA shutdown, which will likely last a more than a month due to Congress’ August recess. LaHood, a former Republican congressman, notes that “safety is not compromised” but this is mostly a labor issue. One reason this has become such a political football is that, behind the scenes, it’s a bit of a proxy battle over unions — see, the National Mediation Board made it easier for these workers to unionize, if they so choose. This was part of the reason a short-term deal got blocked — Sen. Orrin Hatch wasn’t having it. Ultimately, it’s the same thing we said yesterday — a business should pay its employees instead of squabbling over minor issues. source

U.S.: Bob Bennett out: In Utah, Republicans throw over one of their own

  • The political atmosphere, obviously, has been toxic and it’s very clear some of the votes that I have cast have added to the toxic environment. Looking back on them, with one or two very minor exceptions, I wouldn’t have cast them any differently even if I’d known at the time it would cost me my career.
  • Utah Sen. Bob Bennett • Regarding his shocking loss at the Utah Republican Convention, where he was ousted in favor of two fresh faces – Tim Bridgewater and Mike Lee, who will face each other in a June primary. Bennett, a three-term politician, is the first Utah senator ousted by his party since 1940. Fellow Sen. Orrin Hatch said he felt bad for his counterpart, “But you know, people are angry. They’re really upset at the way things are going and I think to a degree that’s what hurt him.” source

Politics: This should wake you up: Hillary Clinton, Supreme Court nominee?

  • Whoa, what did he just say? Our boy Orrin Hatch was on The Today Show this morning and dropped this bombshell. Hillary Clinton is a possibility for Supreme Court justice. If this is true, it’d be a major change for the court, because everyone knows Hillary and she’d already come with a long history. Oh, and she just ran for president a year or two ago.

U.S.: Campaign contributions didn’t affect the vote that much, it seems

  • $9.27 million the amount Republican John McCain has gotten from the health care industry; Orrin Hatch and Mitch McConnell were also well-compensated
  • $8.34 million the amount Democrat John Kerry got; Max Baucus (the bill’s biggest influencer) and Arlen Specter also got slightly bigger paydays than Hatch & McConnell source

Politics: Expect a long, drawn-out process to a Senate health care vote, guys

  • We’re talking about one-sixth of the economy. This should be a very deliberative process. And it should take more than a month and a half.
  • Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah • Discussing Republicans’ desire to stretch out the process of voting on the health care beyond the end-of-year deadline Obama wants. Hatch also says it’s unlikey any Republican senator will support it, which means that Harry Reid needs to get his boys on point if he wants 60 votes. • source
