Tech: Scribd rides the Prop 8 decision train to major viral success

Prop 8 Ruling FINAL

  • Credit where credit is due. Legal documents aren’t nearly as exciting as videos, obviously, but that didn’t stop the Prop 8 decision from becoming Scribd’s most viral document ever – getting 100,000 views in 24 MINUTES. It currently rests at 280,000 views, which would be a pretty killer number for your average YouTube video. And Scribd took advantage of the extra traffic by loading the document with display ads. Need any more evidence that Scribd’s move to HTML5 was a really good idea? Here you go. source

Tech: Internet Explorer 9 actually standards-focused, unlike IE8

  • 20 Internet Explorer 8’s score on the popular Acid3 browser test
  • 95 Internet Explorer 9’s score, according to its test preview source
  • » Don’t get too excited yet: While the browser is clearly designed to standards (about time), it’s only available for Windows Vista SP2 and above – which means boxes still using Windows XP and IE6 will continue to rule the world.

Tech: Dude behind Facebook lawsuit sounds like a piece of work

  • If at some point in the future I start running Facebook, I guess I’m going to have to hire him to keep running the company. I really don’t have much interest in it.
  • Paul “ripping off little old ladies for firewood” Ceglia • Explaining what he’d do if he gained ownership of Facebook in court. He claims that he would’ve never sued Facebook for ownership unless he had gotten into legal trouble over his wood-pellet business. The reason this smells: He apparently forgot that he once had a contract with Zuckerberg, which seems absurd considering that his company is so ubiquitous. Best part of this story: Someone ELSE claims that he owns a share of Facebook. “We’re going to lay claim that I own it,” said Andrew Logan, the owner of StreetDelivery. “[Ceglia] was under contract to me.” source

Tech: JailbreakMe makes it possible to jailbreak your iPhone by accident

  • So, we bet you want to jailbreak your iPhone 4. Well, JailbreakMe has you covered. Using your iPhone, go to this here site. (If that site’s not working, check out this one. Oh, and read more here.) If you’re not using an iPhone, it won’t do anything, but on your iPhone, it’ll jailbreak it – using the cloud. This. Is. A. Big. Deal. Apple can’t be happy about this. This makes “stupidly easy” seem like a major understatement. (Warning, though: There are some issues with FaceTime and MMS for you iPhone 4 kiddies, so be careful. Oh, and trust us when we say DON’T DO THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING!) source

Biz, Tech: The best way to get around patents? Focus on emerging markets

  • Want to build your own iPhone? You may run into patent trouble in the U.S. if you get too far, but if you pick the right emerging market, you may be able to pull it off without running into patent trouble. Indian-American scholar Vivek Wadhwa throws out this knowledge – the “Patent-Free Zone” – to budding entrepreneurs on TechCrunch. Put simply, you could go to Mexico – where Apple doesn’t have many patents filed – and create a similar product there without much legal trouble. And it extends to any number of products. It’s actually a smart approach – as long as you have the right product and the right market. source
