Tech, U.S.: Twitter’s so popular now, smart people are doing it from space

  • From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!
  • Astronaut Mike Massimino • In the first Tweet from space. OK, who let this guy bring his iPhone onto the spacecraft? We admit, we misread “launch” as “lunch” and chuckled a little inside. • source

Tech: But wait, that’s not all Google has to offer! Meet Google Squared.

Google Squared pulls off the mean trick of giving context to your search information. If they were selling Ginsu knives, they’d make a killing. source

Tech: It slices, it dices, it helps you find stuff! Google improves its search.

  • The new features Google seems to be gunning for the immediacy of Twitter search through its redesign, which much like every other Google redesign, is only obvious after a little digging. Javascript allows you to narrow your search criteria to something as recent as the last day, as opposed to having to dig through weeks of content to find what you want. It also sorts based on the type of content, like reviews. source

  • Why the change? “So when you get your search results from Google,” says Google exec Marissa Mayer, “you need to be able to say ‘I really just want the most recent’ or ‘I really just want reviews’ – to slice and dice search results so that you can experience and visualize them in an entirely new and enriched way.” Mayer’s speaking like a supergenius right now. We wonder if she’s available (and if she’d say yes). *Fawn* source

  • Our take? We’ve loved Google a lot in the past for things they do, but it always did feel like the organization end was lacking a little. To narrow down searches, it required numerous clicks or knowing the right boolean to look for something recent. They’re reacting to a trend that has seen numerous attempts to topple the company, most famously (and unsuccessfully) Cuil. (Cuil sucks, BTW.) source

Tech: Why Square Enix is a lame gaming company with no heart

  • A bunch of huge fans of Square’s classic ’90s RPG “Chrono Trigger” took it upon themselves to build a fan-tribute game. source
  • “Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes,” worked on since 2004, was nearing release in a few weeks. It was 98% complete. source
  • Despite the fact it was a non-proft venture, Square Enix sent them a cease-and-desist letter telling them to stop. LAME! source

Biz, Tech: Like big, obtrusive ads? Of course you do. More are coming.

  • In times of recession, online ads get bigger. MSNBC is among the first in a long line of advertisers to switch to wide-format ads that take up full pages and recede, that make sidebars ultra-huge and makes it so that they never go away, ever. They’re all part of a group called the Online Publishers Assocation, which has agreed to use these ads. We have a feeling reading articles on the Internet is going to get annoying, but at least these sites aren’t charging. *sigh* source

Tech, U.S.: Court: A dude uploaded naked pics of himself? Clearly it’s hacking.

  • Richard Wolf was looking at (and distributing) porn at work. An Ohio appellate court upheld a felony hacking conviction last week of Wolf that claimed he exceeded his authorized use of the computer. Part of the reason Wolf is facing this conviction is that the law has stretched – The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act has been allowed to be amended by the states who have put in restrictions against access to unauthorized information at work. Technically, porn is unauthorized, but most experts agree that was never the intent of the law. source

Vauban, Germany’s newest trick comes in the form of a suburb designed to be traveled by bike and by foot. Sounds socialist to us! source
