Politics: Charles Schumer justifies Gaza blockade with straight-wrong facts

  • Yo, Charles, what happened? The New York Senator, who is Jewish, woefully misinformed a Orthodox Union crowd by saying that most Palestinians don’t support a two-state solution in Israel. Actually, they do. By using this train of thought, he gets to this conclusion: “Since the Palestinians in Gaza elected Hamas, while certainly there should be humanitarian aid and people not starving to death, to strangle them economically until they see that’s not the way to go, makes sense.” It’s no Helen Thomas-level gaffe, sure, but what an awful justification. source

Politics: Defending Alvin Green: It’s the Democratic Party’s fault, really

  • You have to admit: there’s something vaguely joyous about a no-name guy who lives with his mom screwing up the best-laid plans of the pack of pragmatic losers that is the Democratic leadership of South Carolina.
  • Salon writer Gabriel Winant • Offering a spirited defense for Alvin “what am I doing here” Greene, whose win in the Democratic Senate primary is about to make the South Carolina elections a little more fun. While Democratic leaders want him to step down, Winant notes that it’s all their fault – not Greene’s. “(Vic) Rawl was a classic sacrificial lamb,” he writes, “selected because he’s plausible enough on paper not to embarrass the party or hurt the down-ticket candidates.” Let’s face it, the South Carolina Democrats are more annoyed that he ruined their plans than anything else. Jim DeMint is going to win. source

Politics: Only notable S.C. Democrat: Alvin Greene is a plant

  • There were some real shenanigans going on in the South Carolina primary. I don’t know if he was a Republican plant; he was someone’s plant.
  • Rep. James Clyburn • On Alvin Greene’s surprise victory in the South Carolina Democratic Senate primary. Clyburn, probably the best-known South Carolina Democrat, seems convinced that someone gave Greene the money for the filing fee. “Somebody gave him that $10,000 and he who took it should be investigated, and he who gave it should be investigated,” Clyburn said. Dude, while you may be right, let’s face it. The reason Greene won is because the other guy was an absolute non-entity too. Even he had only a handful of funds compared to Jim “I’m going to coast to victory” DeMint. source

Politics: Sad state of affairs: The new Oprah is … Glenn freaking BECK?!

  • This book is Amazon’s top seller. It’s not exactly a barn-burner. It’s not new. It’s a tome written against the dangers of socialism in the wake of World War II, which shouldn’t exactly be flying off shelves. But it is. Why? Because Glenn Beck devoted an entire show to it. Which means that – sigh – Glenn Beck singlehandedly has the power to make books popular. Crap. We’re going back to bed. We didn’t wake up for this. source

Politics: Alvin Greene: Nikki Haley no longer most scandalous S.C. politician

  • tuesday Some unemployed former army guy without a Web site, Alvin Greene, somehow wins the Democratic primary in the state’s Senate race. Probably because nobody knew who the other guy was, either.
  • wednesday Conveniently, it comes out that Greene allegedly showed a college student some dirty stuff on a computer, which is a felony. The Democratic party, freaked out by this, wants him to quit. He won’t. This’ll be fun, guys. source

  • yesterday The government confirmed for the first time that they found massive oil plumes as far as 142 miles away from the base of the spill. People like us freak out.
  • “today” On “The Today Show,” a top BP exec said this: “We haven’t found any large concentrations of oil under the sea. To my knowledge, no one has.” Wait, what? source

Politics: Barack Obama a new kind of president, one who says “ass” on TV

  • Look, all these interviews take attention off the real story: There’s a big oil spill still gushing in the middle of the ocean and it needs to get fixed ASAP. It’s a huge problem for which we still don’t have a solution. Still, though, you have to imagine Jimmy Carter didn’t get this sharp-tongued when he was dealing with his own never-ending scandal, the Iran hostage crisis, which the spill keeps getting compared to. source
