Politics: Let’s face it. Helen Thomas deserved better than this.

  • Don’t get us wrong. What she said was offensive. It was worth dismissal. But then again, it was one terrible, damaging statement in a career which ranks up there with some of journalism’s greatest. As Twitter user Michael Markman notes, Michael Savage and Glenn Beck have said things nearly as offensive before lunch, and they get to keep their jobs. And now it’s over. Just like that. It’s not fair that she didn’t get to quit on her own terms. Let’s not remember her career for this gaffe but the 50 years that came before it. She deserves it. source

Politics: Hillary Clinton: Iran’s gonna pull something, ’cause they always do

  • I think we’ll see something coming up in the next 24 to 48 hours. I don’t think anybody should be surprised if they try to divert attention once again from the unity within the Security Council … but we have the votes.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • Regarding the sanctions the United Nations Security Council is trying to push for against Iran. Clinton is currently headed to Brazil, where she’s trying to mend fences with the country, which opposes new sanctions on Iran. It’s her second trip to Latin America in three months. source

Politics: Helen Thomas may be getting too old for this line of work

  • This controversy is not going away. After Thomas said in the above clip that the Israelis should “get the hell out of Palestine” and go back to Germany or Poland, she was dropped by her speaking agency. While she’s still got her position as dean of the White House Press Corps, she’s lost a number of connections as a result of this statement. Journalist Craig Crawford, who recently worked on a book with Thomas, won’t work on any others. Former reps from both the Clinton and Bush administrations (including Ari Fleischer, who’s Jewish and “used to like her”) have thrown her under the bus. Yikes. We can’t support this, either. Bad move, Helen. source

Politics: Democrats realize that town halls not best way to reach constituents

A year ago, this dude yelled at Arlen Specter. Now he’s out of the Senate race, and Democrats aren’t holding town hall meetings anymore. Coincidence? We think not. source

Politics: Max Headroom: We just played “We Didn’t Start the Fire” backwards

  • Thad Allen just scared usWant to feel something hit the pit of your stomach? Watch this clip, where Thad “this oil spill needs a hero” Allen says in very plain terms that the spill is going to be with us well into the fall. Let’s hope a hurricane doesn’t plow through in the meantime. *fingers crossed*

  • Obama the GOP’s “Enemy”? On “Fox News Sunday,” Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who has a reasonable beef with Obama over the response to the oil spill, compared him to a Napoleon quote about watching your enemy self-destruct. The key phrase there is not “self-destruct.” It’s “enemy.”

  • He only wrote the lyricsWhether or not the news cycle has just gotten faster or what, comedian Bruce Fine was able to take Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and focus it on everything that’s happened during the Obama administration. The Joel version covered 50 years. Whoa.

Politics: Can the bizarro hippies win big states like California or Nevada?

  • We are 14 months old as an organization. We’re not quite as effective as we want to be all over, but by the 2012 election we will be a force to contend with.
  • Central Valley, Calif. bizarro hippie coordinator Steve Brandau • Regarding the mediocre showing of his state’s bizarro hippie Senate candidate, Chuck DeVore, who will likely finish far behind Carly “demon sheep” Fiorina in Tuesday’s Republican primary. A win by Fiorina, who inexplicably has the support of the Republican establishment, could symbolize the level of success the bizarro hippie movement will actually have in the long run. In Nevada, however, it appears bizarro hippie favorite Sharron Angle might pull an upset. So, who knows? Maybe they might be able to turn this thang into a national movement. source

Politics: Old-school documentary: Crude oil good for oysters! Really!

  • This chestnut from the ’60s seems all the more ironic in the wake of the current oil spill. Skip to around the 9-minute mark to see a bunch of oysters who really like crude oil. The American Petroleum Institute knows a thing or two about making bad PR seem good. source

Politics: Mickey Kaus: WTF is a Slate columnist doing running for Senate?

You’d think a California Senate candidate who wrote a political blog for Slate for over a decade would have nothing to say. But you’d be surprised. source

Politics, World: Israel to UN: We don’t need no stinkin’ international oversight!

  • We are rejecting an international commission. We are discussing with the Obama administration a way in which our inquiry will take place.
  • Israel’s US ambassador, Michael Oren • Regarding the country’s response to the UN’s proposal of an international commission to study what happened during the flotilla incident. Why reject the proposal? “Israel is a democratic nation,” Oren says. “Israel has the ability and the right to investigate itself, not to be investigated by any international board.” But we’re guessing the international board might have slightly less bias in the situation than Israel might. Just a hunch. source
