  • Let’s face it. Obama’s good with discussing broad. But when it comes to specifics with the American people, he’s a little lacking. The truth of the matter is that there’s not really much new here. Pretty much the one thing that is new, or at least explained in better detail, is the BP escrow fund, which Obama had this to say about it: “This fund will not be controlled by BP. In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent, third party.” source

Politics: The Alvin Greene saga: When in doubt, blame hackers

  • yes South Carolina uses touch-screen voting devices. Rep. James Clyburn thinks that the 12,000 voting machines were hacked, leading to Alvin Greene’s victory, which candidate Vic Rawl is protesting.
  • no The state’s election commission says that theory is bunk. Spokesman Chris Whitmire says that the machines are reliable and that “no candidate has made this claim before.” Likely story. source

  • I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved. Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina, I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response.
  • Rep. Bob Etheridge • Regarding the altercation he had with a couple of “college students” recently. After being asked if he supported the Obama agenda, he got angry, said “who are you?” repeatedly and started hitting the kids. While dude’s reaction wasn’t exactly called for, we argue this statement on BigGovernment.com is just as bad: “Expect more of this. It is going to be a long, hot summer.” Yeah, sure guys. Make more of these stupid fake controversies to draw attention to your crappy site. Play to the worst tendencies of politics. source

  • Meet Alvin Greene Keith Olbermann is perhaps the perfect guy to question Democratic Senate candidate Alvin Greene, who folds no matter what question you ask him. Olbermann questions him as if he was talking to a child – a child who stumbled into an embarrassingly adult situation.

  • On that obscenity chargeOK, we all know how Alvin Greene inexplicably won a South Carolina primary. But we don’t know very much about the obscenity charge. Fortunately, the reported victim (and her mom!) told Shepard Smith exactly what happened. Hey, that’s not a picture of a football!

  • Good message, bad idea Remember Sophie B. Hawkins? The singer-songwriter who became famous for singing about wanting to be your lover? Well, now she has a song about the oil spill. And it’s awful. Oh boy. Yes, you should donate. No, you shouldn’t listen to this terrible, terrible song.

Politics: NAACP takes the PETA route to irrelevancy, apparently

  • A talking greeting card that is clearly labeled as being about space used the phrase “black holes.” The NAACP for some reason thought it sounded like something else. Now they want a formal apology. Dudes, do you remember why people laugh at PETA? It’s because of stuff like this. You guys have a stellar reputation. Why waste it on stuff like this? To its credit, Hallmark pulled the card, despite the fact that they had a pretty sound case for ignoring the claim. source

Politics: CNN spatwatch: James Carville basically calls Fareed Zakaria an idiot

  • “We want to eat our own shrimp! We don’t want to eat Indonesian shrimp!” Let’s admit that James Carville 1.) Is really entertaining when he’s talking about hitting someone with a “football bat” 2.) Has a really good point here which we actually touched upon in the last post and 3.) Is going to have to be careful not to run into Fareed when he’s walking around the office in the next few weeks. Wouldn’t you be emotional if you were from the Gulf, too?

Politics: Is Obama’s real problem that he doesn’t have a king to help out?

  • Wait, wait, hear us out. Our boy Nicholas Kristof threw this idea by us. Essentially, Obama’s problem is that he can’t focus on getting stuff done the way David Cameron can because he has to spend all his time worrying about public appearances and traveling the world. He’s had to delay his trip to Indonesia and Australia twice because of the oil spill, which he’s getting crapped on about anyway, because he’s focused on the nitty-gritty rather than the showy. Germany has a president who just makes public appearances; Japan’s emperor does the same thing. Why does the U.S. need one guy to shoulder the whole job? It’s a tough job. source
