Biz, Music: Vibe Magazine’s phoenix-like rise from the ashes came quick

  • Now Web-focused, with a quarterly magazine. Yesterday, Uptown Media announced that they had agreed to take on both iconic hip-hop rag Vibe Magazine and its Web site. First on the agenda? Site redesign! By the end of the year, they hope to have another print product on the shelves, this time a quarterly publication with a smaller circulation. Vibe stopped printing after a 40% decline in ads bled them dry earlier this year. source

Music: We could post Andrew W.K. videos on the site all day

  • Our favorite ironic celebrity of all time has a new album coming out. Of solo piano playing. Called “55 Cadillac.” But based on this video, you’d think it was the soundtrack to a summer blockbuster. Awesome, kids. Just awesome.source

Music: Brooks done with Dunn. Dunn done with Brooks. Hicks weep.

They were critical successes. Alas. Brooks & Dunn, a duo that sold a lot of records and won lots of awards in country circles, announced they were breaking up today. Stop sobbing, you big baby. We know it's really sad. source

Music: It’s a bit early to pick the best and worst album covers of 2009, but …

  • … AOL makes a pretty compelling case for doing it now. One of these album covers was selected as the best; one was selected as the worst. Can you tell which?source

A pretty picture in place of Golau Glau
  • Whoa, what is this?

    Listen to them

Q1: In 15 words or less, describe your sound: Golau Glau make electronic silverpop.

Q5: In 15 words or less, what’s next for you? Some tasty slabs of vinyl, we hope, in time for your Christmas list. source

Music: We don’t think Lady Gaga said this, but we’re quoting it anyway

  • It’s not something that I’m ashamed of, just isn’t something that I go around telling everyone. Yes. I have both male and female genitalia, but I consider myself a female.
  • Lady Gaga • As she was supposedly quoted about her gender identity, which apparently gives credence to the claim she’s a hermaphrodite. The claims were given legs after a recent wardrobe malfunction made it look like the “Poker Face” singer was packing more than the usual. Regarding the claims, Gaga’s manager said: “This is completely ridiculous.” We’re inclined to agree. • source

Music: Saturday Mixtape: Who rules more, YACHT or The Dodos?

  • 1. We needed some euphoria, and Dananananaykroyd (what an annoying name!) provides it in spades on their latest album, “Hey Everyone.” “Pink Sabbath” makes us want to leap in the air like the coolest six-year-olds ever.
    2. The Dodos are awesome. Hewing a little more closely to the “Sung Tongs” sound than Animal Collective does now, 2008’s “Visiter” was an underrated gem. And new album “Time to Die,” which we ganked “Longform” from, keeps the quality high, avoiding the fate of fellow blog buzz bands.
    3. We’re suckers for sensitive white guys singing in unison. And you don’t get more sensitive than Kings of Convenience (featuring unsung indie hero Erelend Oye), whose “Winning a Battle, Losing the War” always wins our hearts.
    4. YACHT’s killer “See Mystery Lights,” which looks like a huge breakthrough for the duo, has a lot of highlights, but the highest is “Ring the Bell,” a slow-building calling card for DFA’s newest act.
    5. Like Grizzly Bear, Nurses plays in the space between electronic and natural sound, and while their victories on “Technicolor” split evenly between the percussive, the vocal and the digital, they do it with a little more flair than Grizzly Bear. Pure engagement.source

Music, Offbeat: Tree tunes: A sound designer makes a tree sing

  • This guy is officially cooler than us. Diego Stocco, an Italian sound designer, hacked a tree to create music using only the tree and some high-tech recording equipment. And the result? Pretty awesome.source

Music: Radiohead’s in no rush to make a new album. Sadly.

  • The next LP? Not right away Thom Yorke admitted this much in a recent issue of The Believer, causing thousands of hipsters to have early-onset heart attacks. “None of us want to go into that creative hoo-ha of a long-play record again,” says Yorke. “Not straight off.” Part of it is that they don’t want to do an album like “In Rainbows” again. Yorke continues: “Not that it’s not good, I just can’t… bear… that.” source

  • Expect one-offs instead Radiohead, however, will continue to release special one-off things, such as “Harry Patch [In Memory Of],” the memorial song they created for a World War I soldier who recently died. Orchestral work is also on the table. Despite the awesomeness of projects like this, “In Rainbows” is evidence of the LP’s greatness and it’d be a shame to see them stop. source
