Culture: Oprah just left a gaping hole in many local network schedules

  • We have the greatest respect for Oprah and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors. We know that anything she turns her hand to will be a great success. We look forward to working with her for the next several years, and hopefully afterwards as well.
  • A statement by CBS Television Distribution • Regarding Oprah’s decision to leave her generation-old institution of a talk show behind. It probably has something to do with the launch of “OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network,” a joint venture between her studio, Harpo, and Discovery Communications. The network is planned to start up She’s leaving her show in September of that year. And the broadcast industry weeps for the loss of one of its own. • source

Culture: Daily poll: The forthcoming release of “Twilight: New Moon”

  • As usual, ShortFormBlog has stuck behind its policy of only lightly covering pop culture phenomena that have become unstoppable juggernauts (unless it’s Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin – because the we can make fun). But today, a tinge of remorse hit our hearts over our utter lack of coverage of “New Moon,” which stands to make gobs and gobs of money tomorrow. Are you excited? Annoyed? Let us know. Vote above.source

Culture: Funny or die? Will Ferrell is the least-bankable actor, a study sez

For every dollar Will Ferrell makes, his movie makes an average of $3.29. Considering his high price tag and the film’s big budgets, that’s not really a lot. source

Culture: Note to Fond du Lac Reporter journalists covering R. Crumb: Try harder

  • I don’t think a picture or comic could contain God. It is hard for me to pick a picture and say, ‘This is what God looks like’ because of His amazing greatness. When I think about God appearing, I think of the effect of God’s hand in the people’s lives around me.
  • Marian University campus ministry vice president Valerie Young • Discussing the controversy surrounding R. Crumb‘s new “Book of Genesis” graphic novel. First of all, screw the reporter (Heather Stanek) for comparing Crumb’s work to a bunch of superheroes. If you know anything about Crumb, he’s angled his entire career and drawing style and perverseness to be a reaction to the traditional comic book mold. Secondly, where’s the balance? No atheists were interviewed in the article, either, and neither were people who could look at the novel as a literary piece of work. Did this reporter know anything about Crumb – and his motivations for the work – before writing about him? • source

Culture: Sexiest Man Alive: Somehow, the real thing is faker than the Photoshop

sexiestman
  • Dear blogosphere (you know who you are), are we really so gullible as to believe the Robert Pattinson “Sexiest Man Alive” cover? You barely have to know anything about Photoshop to notice that it’s an obvious fake. It doesn’t use the same fonts, and clearly you can tell they’re off! (On the other hand, nice job on the hair, anonymous faker – considering you knew this image had approximately an hour of currency on Twitter, you did a good job cutting it out.) Fortunately, it isn’t as fake as a magazine putting a 46-year-old man on their cover, claiming he’s the sexiest man alive, and trying to feign relevance. That, my friends, is fake. (Sorry, Johnny Depp. It’s not you. It’s People Magazine.)source

Culture: It’s the Bible, done up all George Costanza-style

Jason Alexander does Joseph in a massive new audio bible. He’s not the only actor fallen on hard times in such a position, as this bible features many B-listers. source

Culture: Janet Jackson lays blame squarely on Dr. Conrad Murray

  • He was the one that was administering. I think he is responsible.
  • Janet Jackson • Talking about her brother Michael’s death, and Dr. Conrad Murray’s role in it, on ABC. She goes on, saying that Murray shouldn’t be allowed to practice medicine. “Not at all,” she said. “So this could happen to someone else? Another family?” • source

Culture: Adam Sandler on his deceased “Remote Control” cohort, Ken Ober

  • Ken Ober was one of the sharpest, quickest, sweetest guys I ever met. He was always a great friend and I will miss him very much.
  • Adam Sandler • Speaking of the death of Ken Ober, who he worked closely with for five seasons on early MTV non-music foray “Remote Control.” Ober didn’t gain the fame that his co-stars – which also included Denis Leary and Colin Quinn – bathed in after the show ended its run. But he did build a solid career as a producer after his game-show-hosting career ended. And this, friends, is why we should give “Downtown” Julie Brown and Adam Curry a call. You never know when you’ll miss your chance. • source

Culture: Here’s what no more self-breast-exams is gonna cost us

  • Back in 1990, this was groundbreaking television. “Beverly Hills, 90210” tackled Brenda Walsh’s teen breast cancer scare – a tumor she found, by the way, after examining her own breast. Beyond adding to the obvious dangers of breast cancer – there’s a whole MONTH dedicated to it, for crying out loud – no more breast self-examinations means that the possibility of this scene happening in real life just went down significantly. Did the U.S. think of all the lives that could be saved, or even the amount of cheesy TV melodrama that could be created? Of course not. This is why experts are questioning the changes.source
